DEFINITION
To supervise and implement the activities of the Park Maintenance Division including the maintenance of parks, recreational facilities, landscaped areas, swimming pools & splash parks; to supervise and train park maintenance personnel and to provide responsible and technical staff assistance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
- Receives general direction from the Park Maintenance Superintendent.
- Exercises direct and indirect supervision over maintenance workers.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Plan, organize, and supervise the work of crews engaged in park and recreational grounds maintenance, repair, and minor construction.
- Review work assignments and schedule personnel and equipment in accordance with job requirements.
- Inspect landscaped areas to evaluate work progress, resolve work problems, and determine additional needs.
- Supervise the maintenance and preparation of fences, swimming pools, splash parks, athletic fields, and other municipal facilities.
- Supervise and train personnel in the operation of a variety of park maintenance equipment including tractors, mowers, weed-eaters, and line-trimmers.
- Supervise the planting and care of specialized areas and the seeding, fertilizing, and maintenance of lawn areas.
- Complete and maintain a variety of records and reports. Prepare requisitions for materials and supplies.
- Assemble a variety of equipment and materials used in recreational facilities and playgrounds.
- Assist in budget preparation and control.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
For indefinite periods of time - mobility within an office and field environment; exposure to fumes, odors, dust/mites, electrical, mechanical and chemical hazards; exposure to extreme cold, heat, and noise; sitting; standing; walking; sorting; seeing; kneeling; reading; decision making; reaching above shoulder level; occasional lifting and carrying up to 80 pounds; using both hands for simple and firm grasping; climbing stairs; clarity of hearing; communicating clearly and effectively. Operation of the following: calculator, pumps, generators, all hand tools & operating a motor vehicle through city traffic.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Basic Pool Operations & Water Chemistry
- Basic carpentry, plumbing and electrical maintenance and repair.
- Basic pump & pool filter repair.
- Principles, practices, methods, and materials used in landscape maintenance, park development, installation, and minor construction.
- Record keeping and reporting procedures.
- Principles and practices of constructing and maintaining pools, splash pads, athletic fields, playgrounds, and facilities.
- Related hazards and accepted safety precautions. Plant and turf pests and diseases.
- Principles and practices of personnel supervision and evaluation.
- Personal computer operation and general applications (Word & Excel)
Ability to:
- Plan, direct, and supervise the work of crews in pool, splash pad, landscape, facility maintenance, grounds maintenance, repair, and construction.
- Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports. Read and interpret plans and specifications.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Estimate time, materials, and equipment needed to perform maintenance and repair work.
- Analyze situations and adopt an effective course of action.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate subordinates.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Respond to “on call” and emergency situations.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule. Including nights, weekends, and holidays.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Four years of increasingly responsible experience in swimming pool maintenance, the construction and maintenance of parks and landscape facilities.
High School Diploma or GED, supplemented by specialized courses in landscape architecture, horticulture, or related field.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year a valid Texas Class "B" CDL.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year a Certified Playground Inspector Certification.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year a Certified Pool Operator Certification.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within one year a Pesticide and Herbicide Certification.
