The City of Leesburg is recruiting candidates for the position of Firefighter Recruit. Selected candidate(s) must be able to pass a medical evaluation, criminal background and driving record check post-job offer. The purpose of this class is to recruit prospective persons from the region who may be hired as a Firefighter Recruit (FFR) and assigned to orientation training within the department with primary training being received by a local Fire Rescue Institute. This person must demonstrate multiple proficiencies including but not limited to, strong moral character, firefighting-related and EMS duties and operations as assigned, ability to multi-task, effective communication skills, strong work ethic, etc. Requires a high degree of independent decision making in emergency situations; incumbent is exposed to all manner of environmental conditions including extreme temperatures, dust, noise, dim lighting, and all other conditions as present in the performance of essential function. Incumbent may also experience such hazards as fumes, flames, chemicals, blood, other body fluids, and all other hazards as required in performance of essential functions; requires the operation of various equipment, machinery, which will be determined through a competitive selection process and extensive background check. Upon successful completion of the fire academy and passing the State Certification Exam, the FFR may be sworn in as a firefighter and proceed to the Leesburg Fire Department orientation candidate class.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Physical and dexterity refers to the requirement for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement in accordance with NFPA 1583. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must regularly lift and or move equipment and/or persons weighing up to 150 pounds. Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, climb or balance, kneel, crouch or crawl, sit and talk or hear, stretching, routine lifting, exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis, and skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
