What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Summer Intern - Outreach (Para-Professional/Technical Worker) position at City of Lincoln/Lancaster County?
Internship Dates: 100 hours to be scheduled between May 8 and August 13, 2025, primarily between May 27 and July 31.
This position is with Youth Services Outreach for Lincoln City Libraries (position is based at Bennett Martin Public Library - 136 S. 14th Street - and requires travel to various locations within the City of Lincoln and Lancaster County).
This intern position will predominantly assist with Youth Services Outreach activities held at City and County community sites. Reliable transportation will be necessary to report to sites as assigned according to a schedule. Mileage will be reimbursed if using a personal vehicle. Reimbursement for other means of transportation will not be available.
Hours: Part-time, Monday – Sunday as assigned. Hours will vary. This position will primarily be scheduled for work during the time frame of 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday. May include some evenings until 8:00 pm. This is a temporary internship position that will end on or before August 13, 2025.

- Training – Friday, June 27, 2025 – 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Bennett Martin Public Library (136 S. 14th Street)
- Training – Friday, July 11, 2025 – 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Bennett Martin Public Library (136 S. 14th Street)
- Library Board Meeting – Tuesday, July 15, 2025 – 8 a.m. – 9 a.m. – Bennett Martin Public Library (136 S. 14th Street)
The Nebraska Library Internship program introduces high school and college students to the varied and exciting work of Nebraska libraries by involving them in real library work that takes advantage of their experience and interests. Interns at all locations will be introduced to the full array of public library work including the scope and value of the variety of diverse programs and activities held at public libraries throughout the state. Tasks will include checking materials in, checking materials out, placing materials on hold, requesting items via InterLibrary Loan, creating/maintaining displays, answering reference questions, registering customers for library cards, providing community outreach, facilitating Maker events, registering customers for Summer Reading, and assisting with regular programming and special events.
Credit: Internships are funded by the 2025 Nebraska Library Internship Grant Program. This project is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Nebraska Library Commission.
Minimum qualifications/Necessary Special requirements/Abilities & Skills: (first two are grant required.)
- Be a student in high school or college.
- Never been employed by a library or as an intern at a library (previously or currently).
[There are no restrictions associated with students who have served as volunteers at a library.]
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
- Have an interest in libraries.
- Possess basic computer skills.
- Able to work well with customers of all ages and backgrounds.
- Bilingual language skills are a plus.
