JOB TITLE: Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Technician

FLSA DESIGNATION: Non-Exempt

OCCUPATIONAL CATEGORY: Service/Maintenance

OBJECTIVE: To ensure effective field operations and ensure the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system is accurately reading as well as maintaining water meters and assisting in good customer relations.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  2. DIRECTS: Does not supervise any employee
  3. OTHER: Works closely with the Utility Billing Clerk(s) on a day-to-day basis, other departmental employees, and with the general

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

  • Under general supervision, maintains and troubleshoots the AMI meter reading system, reads water meters, and records readings on hand held meter reading devices as needed. Works with Incode for work orders as well as keep up with inventory.
  • Investigates questionable meter readings and evaluates/determines the outcomes to resolve these situations in a timely and professional manner; while communicating and collaborating with Public Works and Finance staff.
  • Coordinates as well as installs or replaces fire hydrant meters.
  • Identifies and replaces broken or damaged meters.
  • Responsible for the turning water service on or off for customers who voluntarily begin/discontinue service; communicates and assists as needed in resolving conflict for delinquent customers whom services may be interrupted or shut-off.
  • Proactively communicates effectively with the public and other City employees.
  • Responsible for the safe operation, care, and appearance of assigned vehicles and equipment.

  • Must be able to works variable hours and days to accommodate required overtime and/or on call schedule.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND TRAINING:

  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, equipment and materials used in the construction, operation and maintenance water distribution systems and wastewater collection systems;
  • Knowledge in information technology and operations relating to Advanced Metering Infrastructure and utility billing.
  • Skill in use of computer, tablet, smart phone, typing/data entry, various software platform(s) and accessory equipment.
  • Skill in reading and understanding technical documents, construction plans, policies and procedures relating to the City operations, and perform mathematical computations.
  • Ability to learn and operate the AMI Neptune system.
  • Ability to utilize, input, and operate Incode for work orders and manage the interface between the AMI system and utility billing (Incode) system.
  • Ability to utilize and manage Incode Inventory software (Tyler Technologies), perform data entry and accounting of the water/wastewater asset inventory, identify and prevent errors, and ensure strong accountability of department asset management.
  • Ability to change out meter valves live without turning water off when necessary.
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and direct the varied activities between the Public Works Department staff and Finance Department staff
  • Ability to prepare and understand concise and accurate reports.
  • Create, build, and maintain positive and productive working relationships within the organization and community as well as communicate clearly and respectfully with City employees, citizens, businesses, and visitors.
  • Ability to write and type clear and concise reports, memos, and other correspondence.
  • Ability to receive and return telephone calls with professional courtesy, attentiveness, and concer
  • Ability to exercise reasonable, fair judgment and coordinate the work of peers and co-workers in routine and emergency situations while effectively handling them with courtesy, persuasion, and tact.

PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Lifts and carries up to 100 pounds; pulls, pushes or drags up to 150 pounds. Walks, stands, and sits for extended periods of time. Occasionally required to run, climb, crawl, stoop, twist, balance, etc. Uses eyes, ears, nose, arms, hands, fingers, legs and feet to perform assigned duties and responsibilities. Must be able to work in confined spaces. Duties include exposure to heights; mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards; fumes and odor, dust, mites and toxic waste hazards. Works both indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Class B CDL Texas driver's license with tanker endorsement preferred (or must obtain with in the first six months of employment).
  3. Class D water/wastewater certification or higher (or must obtain within twelve months of hire).
  4. Class C water distribution/ Collection II license within two years of employment.
  5. Minimum six months of Water/Wastewater field experience.
