Police Dispatcher - 911
This is an entry level position that entails significant responsibility requiring an alert, dependable person to provide professional and quality service to the citizens in processing emergency and nonemergency communication. Public Safety Telecommunicator handles the dispatching of police, fire, animal control, code enforcement, and other city departments which need to be dispatched during a twenty-four-hour period by radio or phone. The work involves an element of liability and a strict adherence to statute and protocol regarding confidentiality. Specific assignments are received from supervisors and are carried out in accordance with established rules and procedures; however, employees must be able to act without direct supervision in meeting emergencies. This role routinely uses office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filling cabinets and fax machines; Work is reviewed by the Senior Public Safety Telecommunicator through inspection and observation of daily duties and by results obtained.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operation of two-way radios, multiline telephone, computers and in-house dispatching software.
- Responsibly, accurately and courteously answer incoming emergency and nonemergency telephone calls and extract the maximum amount of essential information in a minimum amount of time.
- Daily data entry of information into CAD system.
- Dispatches police, fire, animal control, code enforcement, and other city departments as needed, keeping a log thereof.
- Records all dispatch information, obtains necessary information form complaints to give to the officers, keeps a log of all radio transactions to and from all entities dispatched.
- Responsible for entries and cancellations in the FCIC/NCIC computer and maintaining a log thereof.
- Maintains a strict log of all criminal histories run.
- Monitors all alarm systems, and dispatching the necessary personnel.
- Checks for tag registrations, driver license information, state, national, and local warrants on persons, when a “hit” is received confirming same with the originating agency.
- Sends teletypes to other agencies on the FCIC/NCIC computer system, as well as B.O.L.O.’s (be on the lookout) for items, persons, vehicles, etc.
- Daily morning checks on participants in the Police Care program.
- Participate in job-related training sessions and seminars.
- Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
- Operate standard office equipment.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Training and Experience: Graduation from a standard high school or GED.
Special Requirements:
- Valid driver license.
- Required to become NCIC/FCIC certified within six (6) months of employment.
- Required to obtain the Department of Health Telecommunication certification within one (1) year of employment.
- Have to be able to pass a FDLE level two background check.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of principles and practices of telecommunications.
- Must have typing ability to maintain radio log.
- Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Office.
- Ability to learn in house dispatching software.
- Ability to operate multiline telephone and two-way radio.
- Ability to observe situations analytically and objectively and to report and record them clearly and effectively.
- Ability to think and react quickly and efficiently to tense and/or emergency situations;
- Ability to remain calm in a high stress situation.
- Ability to recall details from numerous informational resources.
- Ability to prioritize decisions based upon multiple criteria and identifiable standards of policies and procedures.
