Job Purpose
Under supervision and/or instruction, performs installations, repairs, and maintains all related equipment and instrumentation to the water treatment plant, terminal reservoir, Lake Mathis pump station, elevated towers, and completes related work tasks as required. Conducts plant operations for the purpose of producing potable water for public use.
Duties and responsibilities
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
· Works effectively with other employees to repair, replace, and maintain pumps, motors, instrumentation, and other related equipment
· Protects the public health
· Reads, understands, and follows written and oral job instructions
· Records logs for reports by hand
· Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
· Pertinent Federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
· Operation of water production, pumping, and storage systems
· Operating process control on incoming raw water
· Setting dosages on chemicals and disinfectants using chemical feed pumps and chlorinators
· Adjusting incoming raw water flow according to the demand of the system
· Storing clean treated water in ground storage tanks ready for distribution
· Backwashing filters to remove settle solids accumulated on filter bed
· Maintaining the upkeep of the inside and the outside of the office and building pertaining to the Water Treatment Plant
· Maintaining the upkeep of the outside area of the Water Treatment Plant facility, which includes, but not limited to, mowing, weed eating, painting, trash pick up
· Maintenance of the clarifiers, motors, and pumps
· Operations of applicable computer systems and software.
· Operation, safety and maintenance requirements of various equipment and tools.
· Other duties assigned
Ability to:
· Record untreated water use in production and does basic water lab analysis such as turbidity, Ph, hardness, alkalinity total organic compounds, total dissolved solids, and chlorine residuals
· Work flexible hours
· Use good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly
· Hear clearly when working around equipment, using safety precautions
· Lift and carry up to 100 pounds, pull, push or drag up to 150 pounds of installation and repair equipment or materials
· Climbs, crawls, kneels, squats, twist, and stoops for extended periods of time while performing installations or repairs;
Education and/or Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. required
A Minimum of two years' experience preferred
License and Certification:
Class “D” operator license is accepted but must obtain a “C” license in six months
Class “C” water certification from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ)
Need to follow TCEQ requirements
SUPERVISION RECEIVED and EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Water & Wastewater Superintendent and/or Public Works Director.
Exercises supervision over the Water Treatment Plant.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions:
· Works indoors with some exposure to mechanical, electrical, explosive, fume, odor, dust, chemical and toxic waste hazards, using proper safety precautions; serve on stand-by for after-hours emergency work as required.
· Frequent outdoor conditions; exposure to conditions of construction and utility project sites including loud noises, dust, heavy equipment; exposure to inclement weather; exposure to other hazards while conducting field inspections; exposure to moving vehicles and equipment, slippery surfaces, and other related conditions.
Physical Conditions:
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting for prolonged periods of time; use of fingers and of both hands required; ability to kneel, stoop, sit, bend, squat, climb and lift; adequate eyesight, hearing, and speech; field inspections require navigating uneven surfaces and grounds; may require entering trenches, climbing ladders.
Maintain mental capacity that permits making sound judgments regarding work and have regular attendance.
