What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Intern - Summer 2025 position at City of Minnetonka?
The primary objective of the recreation intern position is to assist with summer program management and to gain a variety of department experiences in the areas of facilities, programs and special events. The intern coordinates all aspects of the Park Adventures program including program curriculum, supervision of staff and communication with participants and their caregivers. The intern also learns about department and city-wide operations through orientation meetings, staff and board meetings. This is a seasonal summer position (40 hours per week) occurring Monday – Friday with occasional evening or weekend hours.
Desired Qualifications:
- Assist with hiring, onboarding and training of program staff.
- Schedule, supervise and evaluate program staff.
- Develop weekly program curriculum plans and oversee weekly staff meetings.
- Visit Park Adventure sites on a daily basis to evaluate staff, activities and participants while making appropriate recommendations and changes as needed.
- Complete appropriate staff and participant forms such as timesheets, attendance and accident reports, etc.
- Communicate with staff, participants, caregivers and community members in a professional, courteous, friendly and helpful manner.
- Oversee program and site materials, supply inventories and storage.
- Be familiar with and carry out emergency and accident procedures.
- Be reliable, assertive and a self-starter.
- Communicate regularly with Program Manager regarding concerns or issues.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of recreation special events.
- Act as a positive representative for Hopkins-Minnetonka Recreation Services.
- A commitment to and belief in the organization’s shared values.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college/university recreation related program.
- Experience working with youth in a recreational setting.
- Organizational skills and ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Ability to work independently and strong problem solving skills.
- Age 20 or older.
- Valid driver’s license.
