Shady Oak Beach is open June 7th– August 17th. We are seeking team-orientated, ambitious, energetic, and experienced individuals with strong leadership and customer service skills. As a Head Lifeguard, you will direct and oversee the daily operations of the lifeguards and check for understanding with maintaining performance standards. Head Lifeguards will assist in personnel functions such as orientation, training, scheduling and evaluating. The Head Lifeguard should maintain a positive collaborative work environment between staff and management. Head Lifeguards must possess pull knowledge of the Shady Oak Beach Emergency Action Plan (EAP), and be comfortable training lifeguards according to the EAP. Head lifeguards should be effective at handling problems in the workplace, including anticipating, preventing, identifying, and solving problems through consistent policy enforcement amongst both patrons and staff, who may be peers. 

The Head Lifeguard is also responsible for carrying out responsibilities directly related to the lifeguard position:
  • Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR, if necessary
  • Maintains constant surveillance of the beach area. Knows, understands, and consistently applies and enforces safety and facility rules, policies and guidelines
  • Communicates professionally, effectively, and concisely with staff and with the public
  • Maintains cleanliness and a hazard-free environment; performs various custodial duties such as sweeping, picking up trash, and sanitizing all facilities within the beach area
  • Provides excellent customer service and maintains a positive public image by immediately addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, participants, and parents. Contact and ask for assistance from the facility supervisor or manager when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two years of lifeguarding experience
  • Current American Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguard Certification prior to season start or willing to renew prior to start of the season
  • Minimum of 27 hours of weekly availability (equivalent to 4-5 shifts a week.
    • Must be available to work mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Available to attend job-specific training scheduled throughout the season.
    • Trainings at least every other Wednesday at 8am
  • Ability to commit to employment for the majority of the summer season (mid-May through mid-August)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Lifeguard Instruction (LGI) certification preferred (not required)
  • High school diploma or equivalent; or college/university experience
Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Moderately physically demanding work, typically involving a combination of occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Occasionally lift or move items weighing up to 30lbs or heavier items (300lbs) with assistance. When working outdoors, staff are exposed to all types of weather conditions
