THE POSITION
The City of Moreno Valley is seeking a dedicated and skilled Assistant Engineer to join the Capital Projects Division. This position focuses on capital project-related tasks, including project planning, design, and construction support, and coordinating with other departments and agencies. Under general supervision, the Assistant Engineer will perform routine and semi-routine professional-level engineering work to support the City's Public Works Department. This entry-level role offers opportunities for growth and increasing responsibility as the incumbent gains experience and independence.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate for the Assistant Engineer position will have a solid foundation in civil engineering principles and practices, including design and construction. They should possess strong mathematical skills, knowledge of standard construction materials and methods, and an understanding of safety requirements and procedures. Familiarity with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as information technology and computer capabilities related to engineering, is essential. The candidate should be capable of performing detailed analyses, making complex engineering computations, and coordinating the work of technical subordinates. Effective communication skills, both orally and in writing, are crucial, along with the ability to organize, research, and maintain technical files. The ideal candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, independent decision-making abilities, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city management, staff, developers, contractors, consultants, and the public. This position is perfect for someone eager to develop their career in civil engineering and contribute to the City's Capital Improvement Plan.
Minimum Qualifications
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a closely related field; and one year of progressively responsible engineering experience OR, equivalent related work experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
About The Capital Projects Division
The Capital Projects Division is responsible for the delivery of a broad range of Capital Investment Projects. The divisions primary functions is to work alongside City Management to develop and implement the City’ s annual Capital Improvement Plan; consisting of capital infrastructure such as bridges, streets, storm drains , buildings and Park improvement projects.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSAssistant Engineer is the entry-level, non-registered engineering class in the professional engineering class series. Initially under direct supervision, an incumbent performs the more routine professional engineering assignments. With experience, the work becomes progressively more diversified and difficult and requires increasing independence.
Assistant Engineer is distinguished from Associate Engineer in that incumbents in the latter class perform a variety of routine to moderately difficult professional-level engineering work requiring an E.I.T certificate.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
