General Description

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Public Works Superintendent, the Maintenance Worker is responsible for supporting the repair and maintenance of municipal streets, public infrastructure, facilities, and equipment. This role involves various tasks related to street and utility maintenance, equipment upkeep, and ensuring the overall safety and aesthetic quality of City properties.

Essential Functions of the Job / Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  • Perform routine and emergency repairs on asphalt, concrete, and gravel road surfaces.
  • Maintain and repair stormwater and sanitary sewer systems.
  • Install and repair street signs, ensuring proper visibility and compliance with safety standards.
  • Care for City-owned trees and other landscaped areas through pruning, planting, and upkeep.
  • Handle winter maintenance, including snow and ice removal from streets, parking lots, and sidewalks.
  • Assist with operations and maintenance tasks related to City cemetery operations.
  • Maintain and repair various equipment utilized for public works functions.
  • Follow and enforce safety standards to ensure safe working environments for self and others.
  • Participate in required training, maintaining any necessary certifications and licenses as mandated by federal, state, and city policies.
  • Be available for emergency call-outs and after-hours service as needed.

The aforementioned functions are normal for this position. They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA’s)

  • Ability to safely operate a variety of light and medium-duty vehicles and machinery.
  • Proficiency with tools and techniques used in asphalt repair, masonry, carpentry, mechanical repair, and tree care.
  • Knowledge of street maintenance materials and methods, as well as municipal infrastructure systems.
  • Familiarity with grounds maintenance practices, including the care of trees, shrubs, and other vegetation.
  • Strong communication skills for working effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in all weather conditions.

Education and Experience

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in construction trades, with a focus on asphalt, concrete, and/or carpentry.
  • A valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required, with a tanker endorsement to be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
  • This position is subject to federal CDL drug and alcohol testing requirements.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

Employees in this role are required to report to the Public Works Building within 30 minutes of receiving a call-out notice, regardless of weather or road conditions.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires pushing or pulling and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to vibration; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic).
