Analyzes, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical and electrical malfunctions on various types of City vehicles and equipment to include emergency vehicles, small equipment, cars, and trucks.
Utilizes diagnostic, testing, and other equipment such as A/C machines for R134 and R1234yf, computer test equipment, fuel pressure test equipment, voltage, amperes and ohm meters, tire changing equipment, and computer wheel balancer. Uses acetylene and oxygen torches for cutting, gas welding and brazing, uses a MIG welder and Plasma cuter as well as various power tools and equipment necessary to perform repairs.
Performs preventative maintenance (oil changes, tune-ups) major and minor repairs; replaces defective parts as needed on various vehicle systems such as, hydraulic brake systems, Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS), engines, differentials and drivetrains, suspension and steering systems, glass, lighting systems, and air conditioning (R134A and R1234yf systems); performs routine maintenance; removes and replaces damaged or worn tires, repairs inner tubes, and mounts and balances tires.
Adjusts and makes repairs to gasoline and diesel engines; adjusts or repairs carburetors, generators, and related units; rebuilds or replaces all worn or defective parts.
Tunes engines by adjusting or replacing needed parts; makes repairs to clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering mechanisms and related units.
Replaces tie rods, springs, and shock absorbers; replaces alternators, regulators, starters, wiring, gauges; rebuilds or adjusts components as required.
Performs vehicle test drives to aid diagnosis and to check repairs performed.
Reclaims and recycles air conditioner refrigerant.
Prepares work requests, reports and equipment maintenance history.
Maintains a safe and clean work environment at all times; follows hazardous waste disposal and shop safety programs.
Performs related tasks as required.
High School Diploma or G.E.D. and three (3) years of automotive/light equipment repair experience is required. An Associate’s degree in Automotive Service Management Technology is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License and maintain an acceptable driving record. Also, must possess EPA 609 Certification for mobile refrigerant recycling and service procedure. ASE Heating and Air Conditioning Certification is required, or must have the ability to achieve within six (6) months of hire.
ASE and EVT certification(s) are preferred.
Must possess adequate tools to perform the required work. Some specialty tools are provided as needed.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Skilled knowledge of the standard practices, tools, materials, and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment.
Ability to read and interpret plans, technical bulletins, and repair manuals.
Has considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment repair work and shop operations.
Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical malfunctions on various types of City vehicles and equipment.
Intermediate knowledge and skills in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery.
General knowledge of computer diagnostic programs for vehicle equipment and equipment repair.
Ability to diagnose defects in the drivetrains, chassis and other components of power-driven equipment.
Ability to detect by inspection any worn, broken, or defective parts.
Ability to keep records of repairs and service operations and draft reports.
Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to meet specific repair need.
Ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and installation and repair charts.
Ability to enter and maintain data for the City’s fuel system.
Ability to obtain and maintain ASE/EVT Certifications.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with associates.
Ability to accurately add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers; calculate ratios, rates, and percentages.
