Overview
The Police Dispatcher plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of law enforcement operations. This position requires a highly organized individual who can effectively communicate and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. The dispatcher will be responsible for receiving emergency and non-emergency calls, analyzing information, and coordinating responses with police officers and other emergency services.
Minimum Requirements upon application:
- Ability to operate a computer terminal (computer keyboard) to enter, receive, and manipulate associated data and the ability to type at a net corrected speed of 35 words per minute
- Ability to learn the functions of the positions, work under pressure, act quickly in an emergency and adopt an effective course of action; speak clearly and concisely, listen to and record information clearly and accurately, remember numerous details; establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
- Knowledge of English usage and spelling, record-keeping methods, principles of human relations, and basic safety precautions and procedures.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Experience
- Previous experience in dispatching or a related field is preferred but not required.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency in typing and using communication equipment is essential for accurate data entry and response coordination.
- Excellent communication skills are critical for interacting with the public, law enforcement personnel, and other emergency responders.
Candidates must pass a typing test with a minimum of 35 words per minute.
Candidates passing the above-mentioned test, will be required to achieve a passing grade (70 or higher) on a written test established by an outside agency.
Scheduled Hours: Second Shift 4p.m. - 12a.m.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $29.77 per hour
