About This Position

The Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserves. The parks feature 41 trailheads and more than 200 miles of trails, and 185 city parks. Additionally, there are 32 community and recreation centers, classes, and sports programs for all ages, 29 pools, eight golf courses, and a variety of specialty and cultural venues and facilities. The City of Phoenix seeks qualified candidates for the Equipment Operator II position. This position performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks associated with the delivery and repair of refuse containers. Employees are responsible for the receipt and inventory of all containers and associated parts and operating equipment necessary in the delivery, disposal, and repair of containers.

The City of Phoenix seeks qualified candidates for the Equipment Operator II*U2 position. This position exists to safely and efficiently operate light automotive equipment for the City. Equipment operated includes pick-up trucks, dump trucks, flatbed trucks, vans, trailers and mechanical sweepers. Work ordinarily follows an established routine and may perform clerical duties and warehouse inventory duties in addition to equipment operation. Equipment troubleshooting, scrubber operations and fuel spill clean-up may be performed in this classification. There could be specialized equipment in specific departments.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Exercises good judgment when working unsupervised in the field and when providing direction to lower classifications.
  • Communicates with supervision orally, in written form, one-on-one and in group settings on a professional level.
  • Safely drive a delivery truck daily through various parts of the City.


SALARY

Pay Range: $19.54 - $31.82 per hour.

Hiring Range: $19.54 - $24.93 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a departmental training course (certified by Personnel) for equipment being tested.
  • OR be qualified for "out-of-class" pay as an Equipment Operator II.
  • OR log 120 hours on equipment being tested for.
  • OR have a minimum of two years of experience operating commercial equipment under two tons, six months of which must be operating on the same or related type of equipment performed by Equipment Operators II.
  • Commercial Driver's License A is required within the first 12 months of employment; current CDL is desired.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • May require:
    • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
    • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
    • Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.

  • This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
  • In addition, individuals will be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (C.D.L.). Pre-employment drug testing is required for C.D.L. positions. Employees in C.D.L. positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • General experience with a tree care company or landscape operations
  • Experience working in streets, traffic, and around the public.
  • Experience with 2-way radio communications and other wireless devices.
  • Experience operating commercial equipment.
