What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Lifeguard Rapid City Aquatics position at City of Rapid City?
The City of Rapid City needs Lifeguards! We need lifeguards who are great with kids, responsible, and who love to be in the water! Lifeguards also help the community by keeping patrons safe in all pool areas.
Candidates should have reliable transportation, a flexible schedule and have availability to work both during the week and on weekends.
You don't need to be a competitive swimmer, just someone who loves the water and can obtain certification. This position is responsible for performing all aspects of lifeguarding to maintain the safety of patrons.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following, other duties may be assigned:
- Monitors the swimming pool and surrounding facility to ensure safety of all facility users.
- Patrols and enforces pool safety regulations and department policies and procedures to prevent accidents and maintain order.
- Responds to emergency situations and assists or rescues swimmers in distress utilizing established rescue techniques.
- Administers first aid to injuries suffered by swimmers and administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as necessary.
- Keep patrons informed of pool rules and regulations.
- May perform custodial services to maintain a clean and orderly facility.
- May be assigned swim instructor duties.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Serves as a primary lifeguard on shift.
- Supervises other lifeguards and assists in training and orientation.
- Supervises the swimming pool and surrounding facility to ensure safety of all facility users.
- Patrols and enforces pool safety regulations and department policies and procedures to prevent accidents and maintain order.
- Complies, records and maintains simple data including accident reports.
- Age: Must be age 15 or older.
- Certificates: American Red Cross CPR-PR, Lifeguard, and First Aid training. (Training available).
- Physical Demands: Must be able to swim, stand for long periods, lift 50 lbs, and work in wet, noisy, and humid environments.

We offer a Blended Learning Lifeguard Course for American Red Cross Lifeguard/Water Park/CPR/AED/First Aid certification. Candidates must complete online coursework and in-person training, meet swimming requirements, and pass written/physical tests. Lifeguard candidates must be 15 years old by the last day of the class. No refunds.
- 150-yard swim 2-minute tread (no hands) 50-yard swim
- 20-yard swim, retrieve a 10 lb. brick from 7-10 ft deep, & return within 1:40 (no goggles)
