What are the responsibilities and job description for the Fire Mechanic position at City of Redlands?
Under direction, to perform a variety of duties involved in the maintenance and repair of Fire Department apparatus, equipment, and facilities. Exercises no supervision.Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs the full range of skilled mechanic repair work on fire apparatus, equipment, and facilities;
- Inspects, diagnoses, and locates mechanical difficulties on fire automobiles and trucks and other equipment including lawn mowers, weed eaters, smoke ejectors, and jaws of life;
- Plans, schedules, and executes a program of preventive maintenance for Fire Department apparatus, equipment, and facilities;
- Performs annual testing of pumps and ladders;
- Overhauls, repairs, and adjusts engines, transmissions, differentials and clutches;
- Replaces or repairs faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment on fire vehicles and equipment;
- Overhauls or repairs all types of water pumps, valves, and regulators and foam producing equipment;
- Prepares various reports on operations and activities;
- Maintains accurate inventories of tools, apparatus, facilities, and equipment; orders parts as necessary and ensures orders are received timely;
- Estimates time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned;
- Maintains cleanliness of work area and tools; and
- Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
- Three years of experience in automotive, power, and fire equipment repair.
- Equivalent to a high school diploma.
- Possession, and maintenance, of a valid Class A driver's license.
- Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification is desirable and must be obtained within two years of appointment.
- Possession of an appropriate A.S.E. certificate is desirable.
- Possess and maintain an Airbrake Certificate is desirable.
- Possess and maintain an Air Conditioning Certificate is desirable.
- California Fire Mechanics Academy (CFMA) Level I certification is desirable.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, and lift 50 lbs.;
- Exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards;
- Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
