RPU, a division of the City of Rochester, MN, is the largest municipal utility in the State of Minnesota. RPU consists of 200 employees and serves over 57,000 electric customers and over 41,000 water customers in a 60 square mile service area, with revenues nearing $161 million annually.

The Facility Services Department of Rochester Public Utilities is seeking applications for temporary employment during the 2024 construction season.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
Nature of Work
This is temporary/seasonal/limited appointment work which will assist with the day-to-day care and maintenance of the RPU fleet shop, vehicles and equipment.
Work Schedule:
Work is available now through October. Schedules may vary to include some early morning hours, during the average 40 hours per week schedule.
Pay Rate:
$15.76 - $18.39 per hour, depending on qualifications/experience.
The work below is representative of the scope of work performed within this job classification. Individual job duties will vary based on work assignment.
Qualified candidates must be at least 16 years of age.
Licenses and/or Certifications
Valid driver's license
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
Enrollment in or completion of an accredited automotive mechanic program.
Experience performing vehicle or equipment maintenance and routine repairs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: and ability to follow standard safety precautions to ensure safe use of equipment and tools; basic vehicle car care practices, supplies and equipment.
Skill in: general mechanical aptitude; diagnosing and repairing mechanical problems; use of power and hand tools;
Ability to: communicate effectively and follow oral or written instructions; work independently and exercise judgment; operate a variety of tools and equipment used in automotive and power equipment repair; organize and prioritize workload requirements; meet critical time deadlines; establish and maintain effective working relationships; organize work and provide a high quality of workmanship under varied working conditions.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA

In consideration of the overall amount of physical effort required to perform this position, the work is best described as Medium Work : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Physical demands that may be required continuously (2/3 or more of the time), frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time), and occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time) are noted below:
Continuous demands: standing, walking, reaching, handling, bending
Frequent demands: carrying, pushing/pulling, kneeling, crouching
Occasional demands: sitting, lifting, fine dexterity, crawling, twisting, climbing, balancing, foot controls

Environmental conditions that may exist in the performance of the essential functions of this job include:
Extreme heat (above 100 degrees)
Noise (need to shout in order to be heard)
Vibration (exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body)
Exposure to dust/gas/fumes/steam/chemicals
Work outdoors (no effective protection from weather)
Walk on uneven ground (gravel, rocks, mounds, construction sites)
Working around moving machinery (fork-lifts, tractors, mowers)

- Pursuant to MN Statute, seasonal assignments are limited to 67 working days per calendar year or 100 working days per calendar year if the employees are under the age of 22, are full-time students enrolled in a nonprofit or public educational institution prior to being hired by the employer, and have indicated, either in an application for employment or by being enrolled at an educational institution for the next academic year or term, an intention to continue as students during or after their temporary employment.

- Assist with cleaning, repairing and/or maintaining department facilities.
- Wash, vacuum and detail vehicles and equipment.
- Perform minor vehicle or equipment maintenance, routine repairs and parts pick-up & delivery.
