Job Opportunity: Assistant Public Works Director
Are you an experienced public works professional looking for an exciting leadership role? We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Assistant Public Works Director to help oversee and enhance our city’s essential infrastructure.
What You’ll Do
As the Assistant Public Works Director, you will:
- Oversee the operation and maintenance of critical infrastructure, including water treatment and distribution, wastewater systems, natural gas systems, streets, drainage, fleet services, and building maintenance.
- Manage and supervise the Streets and Drainage Department, Fleet Services, and Building Maintenance teams.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including water quality, sanitary sewer overflow, and water conservation programs.
- Supervise and assist with large-scale construction and maintenance projects, working closely with engineers and contractors.
- Assist in emergency response planning, risk management, and security initiatives.
- Prepare and manage budgets, oversee procurement, and plan for capital improvements.
- Lead recruitment, training, and performance management of public works personnel.
- Monitor and reduce water and gas loss through leak detection and audits.
- Review and update operating records, system maps, and departmental guidelines.

- Strong knowledge of public administration, infrastructure management, and regulatory compliance.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with city officials, engineers, contractors, and the public.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in public administration, engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience in public works, utilities, or infrastructure management.
- Licensing: Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Texas driver’s license.
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
