DESCRIPTION OF WORK
DEPARTMENT: Police, City of Rocky Mount
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for assisting with the overall care of all animals within the shelter. The responsibilities will vary based on the current needs of the shelter. This position will work under the supervision of the Animal Services Supervisor in a part-time capacity.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Work involves ensuring the animal shelter is maintained in a clean and safe condition.
- Feeding, handling, and providing custodial care to animals in the shelter.
- Assisting the public in claiming and adopting animals.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Animal Control Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include North Carolina General Statutes; department rules and regulations; City policies and procedures; local, state, and federal animal control laws; and guidelines regarding the euthanizing of animals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related animal control ordinance enforcement duties. Inclement weather conditions, dangerous animals, and dissatisfied citizens contribute to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to enforce animal control ordinances. Success in this position contributes to health and safety of area citizens and animals.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with other City staff; veterinarians; human societies; community groups; animal rescue organizations; and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office, an animal shelter, and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, cold or inclement weather, and potentially dangerous animals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as mask, goggles, or gloves.
