Summary

The Forestry and Natural Resources Supervisor is responsible for managing the forestry and natural resources management programs, including planning, implementation and execution. The position also supports the Park Maintenance Division in specific projects or and overall in the absence of the Parks Superintendent.

Essential Duties Responsibilities

  • Manage and implement the City forestry program including micro and macro level assessment; short, mid, and long-term planning; prioritization of work; and execution.
  • Manage and implement the City Natural Resources Management Program including developing project lists, coordinating seasonal staff and volunteers, and ongoing evaluation and adjustment.
  • Organize and lead the City’s Volunteer Natural Resources Stewardship Program.
  • Support the Parks Superintendent in management and development of the forestry and natural resources budgets.
  • Develop and administer environmental and natural resources programs in the areas of resource management, public education, pest/wildlife management, and forestry; including a minimum of two volunteer natural resources events per month.
  • Manage contract(s) related to forestry and natural resource management.
  • Supervise part-time and seasonal employees, interns, and contractors related to the completion of forestry and natural resources work.
  • Respond to community feedback and concerns related to natural resources management and forestry.
  • Identify opportunities for grant funding in natural resources and forestry; develop programs to utilize grant funding, submit successful grant applications, and secure funding.
  • Supervise daily work in the park maintenance division when the Parks Superintendent is unavailable.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Experience/Education

  • BA in Forestry Management or a related field OR bachelors degree in environmental and natural resources management or a related field.
  • Tree Inspector Certification, or ability to obtain within the first six month.
  • MN Dept of Agriculture Pesticide License or ability to obtain in six months.
  • Knowledge of best practices for natural resources management OR knowledge of best practices for urban forest management, and the ability to attend training to learn about any areas that the candidate is not currently well-versed in.
  • Experience in writing reports, grants, RFP’s, managing contracts and reviewing proposals.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in tree identification, common tree pests, and remediation OR experience in natural resources planning and management including species identification, pest mitigation and project management.
  • Minimum of three (3) years in communication and education of forestry or natural resources both internally and externally.
  • Proficient in tree inventory software or asset management software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software including Excel.
  • MN Dept of Agriculture Pesticide License (Or able to obtain in 6 months)
  • Valid Class D Driver’s License

This position requires employee to work directly with the public in parks, public spaces and on private property; and travel within the City or region.

Some evening and weekend work will be required (typically one Saturday per month, and occasional additional evening or weekend meetings).

This position has moderate physical effort and will work in the field conducting inspections and completing natural resources work. Approximately 60% of the time this position will work in office and 40% in the field conducting inspections or leading and executing work.

Activities that occur rarely (do not exist as regular part of job): lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, and repetitive motions
