The City of San Bruno is currently recruiting for an Engineering Technician/Public Works Inspector. This role involves performing various sub-professional engineering tasks, both in the office and in the field. Responsibilities include reviewing encroachment permit applications and traffic control plans, evaluating development proposals, updating and managing City databases, and inspecting right-of-way and public works projects.
This journey-level position requires the execution of complex technical engineering work across multiple areas. It is distinct from professional classes due to the technical nature of the work, which does not require a degree in engineering. Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is highly desirable.
Key duties include reviewing and coordinating utility encroachment permits, assisting in the preparation and evaluation of plans and specifications for public works and utility projects, performing specialized right-of-way tasks, using computers and other electronic equipment to solve various engineering-related problems, conducting inspections, and carrying out other assigned duties.
- Strong technical, functional, and professional skills or knowledge in principles, practices, and methods applicable to a municipal setting.
- Knowledge of applicable policies, laws, and regulations affecting engineering division activities.
- A desire to gain new skills, knowledge, and experiences, quickly assimilating and applying new information to support Public Works.
- The ability to adapt to significant changes in work responsibilities or environment; exploring benefits, trying new approaches, and collaborating with others to ensure successful change.

- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with an Associate’s degree
- 2 years of progressively responsible experience performing paraprofessional engineering duties
- Valid California Class C driver’s license is required
- Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is highly desirable
