What are the responsibilities and job description for the REFUSE MAINTENANCE WORKER position at City of Sierra Vista?
Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks to provide the collection, disposal, and diversion of solid waste within the community. Assignment may be at either or both of Refuse or Compost.
FLSA status: Non-Exempt.

Will be required to perform a wide array of tasks that support refuse collection, disposal, and diversion services to support the general mission of providing a clean, healthy, and environmentally friendly community.
Safely, effectively, and efficiently operate a variety of heavy equipment including, but is not limited to, backhoe, loader, wood grinder, trommel screen, windrow turner/tractor, water truck, forklift, and vertical balers.
Maintain DOT standards for commercial vehicles.
Performs daily inspections, basic preventative maintenance, and maintains cleanliness of vehicles and equipment.
Operate an automated or manual refuse collection vehicle on a continual basis.
Replace and deliver dumpsters and automated refuse containers and rotate job functions as needed for maintenance purposes.
Maintain dumpsters by cleaning, welding, painting, and replacing lids; assist in the collection and processing of recyclables such as compost, Christmas trees, phone books, newsprint, and aluminum; assist in gathering information for the inventory of available assets such as dumpsters and automated containers.
Will be required to perform other related duties as assigned by the Refuse Section Supervisor.
Actual work schedule is determined by the Refuse Section Supervisor.
May be called in after normal working hours, to assist with emergency situations/conditions.
Knowledge of:
- Daily routes and procedures for special pick-ups.
- City policies and procedures for the collection, disposal and diversion of solid waste.
- Safe driving practices
Skill in:
- Operation and maintenance of various tools and equipment
- The continual safe, effective, and efficient operation of a variety of heavy equipment or ability to learn.
- Using good customer service skills when interacting with customers regarding questions and/or concerns.
- Identifying hazardous materials.
- Performing manual labor in adverse weather conditions, including but not limited to, lifting, and carrying bulky items.
- Basic computer skills and data entry
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with City staff and the general public.
Ability to:
- Effectively and responsibly perform job-duties with general supervision.
- Effectively drive and manage a collection route in a safe and timely manner
- If required, Work overtime, including weekends and holidays.
- Lift heavy objects up to 50lbs and perform strenuous work.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
High school diploma or GED.
AZ Driver's license
Commercial Driver's License (CDL), minimum of a Class "B”, and tanker endorsement with medical certification or ability to obtain within three (3) months after the start of employment.
City of Sierra Vista is permitted and licensed to provide CDL training and skills test and may provide additional resources for new applicants to obtain other necessary pre-requisites for obtaining a CDL Class B.
Five (5) year driving history record required.
Possess and maintain a valid Fort Huachuca access-pass.One year heavy equipment operation experience or municipal public works operations desirable.
Must be able to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation approved physical before start date
