What are the responsibilities and job description for the Weights and Measures Deputy Sealer position at City of Springfield?
Responsible for making routine and special inspections, using standard tests and methods, to enforce conformity with laws and regulations relating to the accuracy of weighing and measuring devices and the weight, measure, price verification, item pricing, octane testing, fuel oil deliveries and count of commodities offered for public sale, and for sealing and condemning the devices inspected. Responsible for the electronic inspection of data collected using W & M software programs. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Sealer of Weights and Measures, who is available for advice and counsel in difficult or unusual cases, but fieldwork is performed independently and decisions made required considerable technical discretion and judgment. Although correction of inaccuracies and deviations is usually effected at the scene through education and persuasion, court action may be initiated to enforce compliance. Work is subject to periodic rechecks by representatives of the State Division of Standards and to review by the Sealer through oral and written reports. No supervision is exercised over other employees.
- Tests for accuracy, adjusts, seals or condemns, large and small avoirdupois, apothecary, metric and troy system, and price-computing scales.
- Tests for accuracy, seals or condemns liquid and dry capacity measures, linear and area measuring devices, taximeters, rental vehicles speedometers, cordage and fabric measuring devices, bulk oil plant meters, oil and gasoline truck and pump meters; calibrates vehicle tank trucks.
- Inspects prepackaged goods and merchandise for compliance with weight, measures, and count requirements and for proper labeling as to weight, measure, and extended price.
- Re-weighs wood, gravel, and road-building materials in transit to detect short weight.
- Conducts octane accuracy inspections, regulates automated checkout systems, enforces unit pricing and handles hazardous materials. The position requires the use of heavy equipment.
- Collects fees for sealing, weighing and measuring devices.
- Investigates complaints of short weight, measure and count. Collects and presents in court evidence of violations.
- Checks hawkers and peddlers and transient vendors for possession of license. Inspects measuring and weighing devices used by such vendors for evidence of prior testing and approval.
- Makes written and oral reports to the Sealer of Weights and Measures of inspections made, conditions found, devices, scaled and fees collected.
- Performs related work as required.
- Working knowledge of state and municipal laws and regulations governing weights and measures.

- Bachelor’s degree in related field
- Two years of experience with government weights and measures programs or three years of commercial testing
