What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Guard position at City of Stevens Point?
In addition to lifeguarding responsibilities, the Head Guard is responsible for the daily operation and supervision of the Donald Copps Municipal Pool and Waterslide. The Head Guard must control the Swimming Pool/Waterslide regarding enforcement of park and pool rules, regulations, and policies; emergency and safety practices, duties, and procedures; and all general park/pool waterslide clean up practices, duties, and procedures.
Head Guard oversees Cashiers and Lifeguards. The Head Guard reports to Recreation Supervisors.
Season – Mid-May to Late August
- Ensure pool rules and policies are being adhered to in a consistent manner.
- Communicate concerns and issues with appropriate parties.
- Ensure the pool staff is serving the public in a positive way.
- Assign lifeguard rotations.
- Notify Supervisor of needed supplies for facility.
- Make decisions with Recreation Supervisors in regard to pools opening late or closing early.
- Supervise and help carry out the opening and closing procedures. Maintain, operate and run pool/waterslide facility in the absence of Recreation Supervisors.
- Understand, follow, and perform weekend procedural duties.
- Understand pH, chlorine, Muriatic Acid, Filtration, Circulation, Disinfection, and take chemical readings for the pool complex.
- Understand the basic mechanical operation of pool complex.
- Ensure the pool complex is locked up/secured each evening.
- Make sure the building is clean before staff leaves each evening.
- Keep necessary records; file required reports.
- Serve as the direct line of communication between the Recreation Supervisor(s) and staff.
- Ensure all pool staff members perform job duties.
- Plan and promote special activities and events with the aid of pool staff & Recreation Supervisor(s).
- Develop and administer weekly staff training sessions with the Recreation Supervisor(s).
- Responsible for knowledge and location of the Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Knows what the proper performance of all personnel is and see that it is carried out.
- Adjust workload when necessary for proper facility operation.
- Open and close the entire facility on time.
- Review/Complete all necessary reports and paperwork involving the pool, waterslide, Cashier
- Responsible to know proper procedure for the pool complex in regards to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Perform first-aid and CPR/AED as required.
- Other tasks as required.

- Ability to work days, evenings and weekends as required.
- Ability to bend, twist, and squat occasionally for 4-10 hours per day and be able to lift 50-100 pounds.
- Ability to read/write and follow verbal and written directions.
- Ability to continuously walk or stand for 4-10 hours.
- Must have a current First Aid Certification, Professional/Community CPR/AED Certification, Lifeguard Training Certification, Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification preferred but not required.
