The Youth Camp Supervisor is responsible for the design, development, and implementation of an exciting, safe, and fun-filled experience for participants in the Youth and Teen program. This position oversees the day-to-day work of adult staff who work with a specific age group of campers. This position works at our Seasonal Camps throughout the year. Supervisors are scheduled to work 40 hours per week between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 6:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. Staff cannot take more than five days of unpaid time off during Camp.

Recreation staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants. This position is classified as safety-sensitive due to the nature of the work. Employees in this position may be subject to random drug testing and/or heightened supervision per the personnel policies and rules.

The availability of work hours for this position will be determined by these factors: program length, weather, and budget. The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate.

Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks
1. Assists in the planning and organizing of activities in the areas of crafts, sports, games, educational, special events, and field trips
2. Provides a safe environment for the participants, and administers basic first aid
3. Complies with licensing regulations and keeps current records of participants
4. Helps to maintain equipment and supplies
5. Attends weekly staff meetings
6. Operates a City recreation van and/or golf cart
7. Maintains regular and punctual attendance

Other Duties and Responsibilities
1. May be required to provide additional assistance to special needs children

Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion.

Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications
Required:

  • Graduation from high school or GED
  • At least 20 years of age AND one of the three following requirements:
    1. Graduation from college with four-year degree in recreation, education (art, elementary, early childhood education), or a subject in the human services field, and experience working with school-age children five to 15 years of age
    2. Two (2) years college training and six (6) months full-time experience (920 hours), or equivalent part-time experience working with four or more school-age children since turning 18 years old
    3. Two (2) years documented full-time job experience working with four or more school-age children since turning 18 years old
  • Three (3) years of experience working in a summer camp setting
  • Two (2) years of experience supervising adult staff
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications (training will be provided by the City) 
  • A valid driver's license, state-issued safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment
  • Two (2) years of experience supervising more than two (2) Adult Staff 

Preferred:
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.

Physical Requirements
This position requires a moderate degree of physical stamina and strength, including the ability to:

  • Frequently sit, stand and walk through a multi-level facility
  • Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, climb, balance and reach over head
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds
  • Frequently use hands and fingers for fine manipulation; occasionally use light and firm grasp
  • Frequently see objects up close to perform office tasks and far away to observe activity for safety hazards or problems
  • Constantly use hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view
  • Occasionally use sufficient physical strength, stamina and agility to perform emergency work in various capacities

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is constantly performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures. Work is performed in a high public use recreation facility where loud noise and multiple events and activities at one time may cause a distraction. Exposure to periods of high activity and stress under demanding conditions. The position requires a great deal of communication with City employees, the public, and outside agencies.

Required Materials and Equipment
City recreation van or golf cart, recreation and sports equipment, walkie talkies and cellular phones.

Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the United States and must successfully pass a criminal background check, reference check, fingerprinting and substance screen. There may be additional pre-employment requirements depending on the nature of the position.
