Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties to maintain and clean the Institute’s grounds, plantings, walks, drives, parking, picnic areas and trails; maintaining the highest quality horticultural standards for all plant material. Position begins July 1, 2025.
Major Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
- Grow and maintain lawns; maintain scenic, nature and picnic areas ensuring they are orderly, safe and ready for use by visitors and staff.
- Maintain walks, roads and parking areas, trails including snow and ice removal.
- Maintain, troubleshoot and repair all gardening and grounds-related equipment including tractors, carts, and attachments. Maintain and perform simple repairs on fleet vehicles, snow plows and snow blowers.
- Perform weeding, insect and disease control. Apply insecticides according to product guidelines and with delegated responsibility by licensed supervisor.
- Plant, prune, water and fertilize trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals using proper horticultural methods.
- Answer visitor questions providing accurate information in a courteous, friendly manner.
- Observe and follow all safety rules, regulations and practices.
- Assist facilities crew with projects during winter months.
- Understand and establish guidelines set for maintaining a sustainable landscape.
- Maintenance of the Water Fountain and work with Maintenance staff to ensure the fountain works properly. Replace heads as needed.
- Set up for special events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Hourly Range:: $21.75-24.00
Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Training, and Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Current pesticide licenses for chemical use preferred.
- Solid customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
Work Experience:
- 1-3 years of relevant experience.
