Nord Family Director’s Fellowship in Youth and Family Programs
The Studio Assistant Intern will support the delivery of studio, youth, and family programs during a 9-week internship. Responsibilities will include material preparation, set-up and clean-up of studio spaces, assisting in program facilitation, and ensuring programming runs smoothly. This internship involves hands-on support in a creative and dynamic environment, working closely with artists and educators to implement engaging and educational art activities. The Studio Assistant Intern will work with children, ages 5 to 16, in various studio art settings as well as in museum galleries.
Over the course of the internship, the selected candidate will:
- Learn about art museum education for PreK-12 students, including an overview of effective teaching strategies, human growth/development, and knowledge of the collection.
- Support Summer Camp/Gallery Teaching needs.
- Create an engaging, interactive learning experience or tour designed for a specific age group.
- Design and develop one to two age-appropriate artmaking projects that can be integrated into gallery visits or art classes for elementary school students.
- Write a reflection paper on the intern's experience, learning outcomes, challenges faced, and how the internship has contributed to their professional development in the field of art education.
By completing this internship opportunity, the intern will gain firsthand experience working with children and collaborating as a team member, practice brainstorming ideas and executing learning experiences for students both in the gallery and in the studios, gain experience communicating ideas to peers and students and learn how to plan and prepare for a gallery learning experience.
During the first week, the intern will meet with colleagues, tour the CMA, and become familiar with the space, facilities, and current exhibitions. They will attend training sessions on the structure and goals of the Summer Camp, museum education methods, and classroom management. The intern will also be introduced to the CMA’s collection and will meet camp staff, gallery teachers, and teaching artists. Additionally, they will begin preparing materials for the upcoming Summer Camp sessions.
Throughout the camp, the intern will assist in the delivery of camp programming by providing classroom and gallery support, preparing materials, and facilitating art activities. In the final week, the intern will develop and finalize the gallery learning experience, incorporating feedback from colleagues and observations made during the camp. This will include preparing a presentation to showcase the learning experience. The intern will also finalize the design for K-5 artmaking projects, ensuring that all materials are prepared, and lesson plans are clear. They will write a reflection paper synthesizing their learning throughout the internship, including analyzing personal growth and insights gained from the camp experience and gallery tours.
The final week will also include preparing a presentation summarizing key learnings, projects, and suggestions for future educational programming at the CMA. The intern will present the gallery learning experience and K-5 artmaking projects to CMA staff and mentors.
Eligibility Requirements
- Upper-level undergraduate students enrolled in studio art, art history, or art education/education programs are encouraged to apply.

This position is funded through an Eric and Jane Nord Family Director’s Fellowship. The pay rate for this internship is $16/hour. The internship is 35 hours/week for nine weeks. The internship includes a generous housing and travel stipend.
