Our Organization
Coastal BUDS believes that every individual has the right to be accepted in their community and have similar opportunities as that of their peers. Our mission is to support, connect and provide resources and opportunities for people with DS and their families in Southeastern North Carolina. By raising awareness and educating our community we help others include and clearly see the value of people with Down syndrome.
At Coastal BUDS we have three areas of focus: social and recreational opportunities, family support and education, and awareness and outreach.
Social and Recreational Opportunities: iCan Swim Camp (an adapted learn to swim camp), iCan Dance Camp, Down to Move, Next Chapter Book Clubs and Down to Cook (healthy life skills and meal prep).
Family Support & Education: This includes community with parent education, welcome bags for new parents, our lending library, workshops/support group, sending parents to conferences such as NC Down Syndrome Conference, DSAIA, NDSS Adult Summit, family picnics and events, benevolent funding and support for heart surgeries (through our High Hopes: Emerson High Heart Fund).
Awareness and Outreach: The Cape Fear Buddy Walk which takes place in the fall, is our largest fundraising event. By including businesses, sponsors, volunteers and our local media we educate the community, raise awareness and funds for our organization. Our community-wide World Down Syndrome Day event is held each March.
Coastal BUDS serves individuals with Down syndrome and their families in southeastern NC: New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender and Columbus Counties.
Position
The Program & Outreach Coordinator is responsible for the planning, implementation, supervision, evaluation, and communication of programs in accordance with the organization’s mission and strategic plan. This position will oversee outreach including community outreach and outreach to new families.
The person in this role must be comfortable balancing the demands of providing education and support to individuals with Down syndrome, families and care providers, program management, researching and providing pertinent research, and working with external organizations who may be able to support the population’s needs. This position will be responsible for providing a blend of in-house programming, coordinating external programming from third-party providers, family support, and dissemination of pertinent research, resources and information that will benefit the community. When applicable this position may also need to plan and implement special events, such as trainings/webinars, seminars, parties or get-togethers. The candidate must be comfortable working to serve the whole family unit.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Programming
- Plans, implements, supervises, and evaluates programming.
- Manages delivery of New Family Welcome Baskets distributed to hospitals and doctor’s offices
- Ensures all new families are added to Coastal BUDS databases and appropriate social media accounts.
- Plans and implements other social events for families throughout the year. This can be a combination of play groups, MOMS/DADS groups, outings, get togethers, etc.
- Creates an annual programs budget, with the assistance of the Executive Director, and ensures program expenses are tracked and stay within budget
- Develops program goals and objectives
- Compiles and reports program outputs and outcomes to the Executive Director
- Analyzes program trends, identifies issues, and recommends solutions to the Executive Director
Volunteers
- Recruits, trains and supervises program volunteers
- Recognizes volunteers through thank you cards, spotlights on the web site or in newsletters, appreciation events, etc.
Communication
- Maintains and updates the Coastal BUDS web site as needed to include all current programmatic opportunities.
- Sends out frequent reminders and communications to market and advertise upcoming programmatic opportunities and events
- Works in conjunction with Executive Director to ensure that programs are properly
highlighted on social media platforms
Miscellaneous
- Assists and supports Coastal BUDS major events, including the Cape Fear Buddy Walk, World Down Syndrome Day and family events
- Represents organization at community events as needed
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Characteristics Required
- Applicant must have a comfort working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and family systems (parents, siblings, grandparents, etc.)
- Degree in social work, health education, nonprofit management, or related field preferred. Direct experience working with individuals/families with Down syndrome may be used in lieu of education if applicable.
- Preferred two years of experience creating, running, and evaluating programs
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Computer literate including knowledge of Microsoft Office, social media and donor database systems
- Project management skills, often running several programs simultaneously
- Previous nonprofit experience preferred
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends REQUIRED
