Revised Position: Director of Afterschool Programming

Reports To: Deputy Director

Supervises: Site Coordinators, Program Leads

Position Type: Full-time: 40 Hours, Exempt

Position Overview

The Director of Afterschool Programming is responsible for leading the strategic development

and growth of the organization’s afterschool (Out of School Time, OST) and extended day

programs. This role ensures the program aligns with organizational goals and maintains quality

and sustainability as well as aligns with DESE’s Educational Vision. The Director oversees

program design, resource acquisition, community engagement, and high-level staff

development, while collaborating with school and community partners to foster a strong

network.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Program Vision


● Develop and implement a long-term strategic plan for afterschool programs that

aligns with the organization’s mission.

● Identify and integrate best practices in afterschool education, fostering innovation

in academic, social-emotional, and enrichment offerings.

● Ensure inclusivity, cultural responsiveness, and accessibility, setting

program-wide expectations for equity.

● Attend all DESE sponsored meetings and professional development

opportunities to ensure program quality and adherence to DESE Educational

Vision and priorities


High-Level Staff Development and Support


● Directly supervise Site Coordinators and high-level program leads, providing

vision, guidance, and support.

● Oversee leadership training for Site Coordinators, developing them as leaders

within their sites.

● Partner with the Director of Afterschool Operations to align staff development

with organizational values and performance standards.


Community and Partnership Development


● Build strong partnerships with schools, families, and community organizations to

expand program resources and offerings.

● Establish advisory councils and community partnerships to support program

sustainability.

● To foster family engagement at a strategic level, advocating for family and

community needs within program design.

Grant Management and Resource Acquisition


● Lead efforts in securing funding through grant writing, sponsorships, and

fundraising initiatives.

● Manage relationships with key funders and community stakeholders to ensure

ongoing support.


● Oversee compliance with grant requirements and work closely with the finance

team to track funds and outcomes.


Evaluation and Reporting


● Set and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for program success, such as

student academic outcomes (SAYO outcomes) and community impact.

● Oversee high-level data analysis and use findings to inform strategic adjustments

and program improvements.

● Prepare and submit reports on program success to organizational leadership,

funders, and stakeholders.


Qualifications

● Master’s degree in education, administration, child development, or a related field.

● Minimum of 5-7 years in afterschool programming or educational leadership, with at least

3 years in a senior leadership role.

● Thorough understanding of Massachusetts state guidelines, expectations and

regulations for OST (after school) and childcare programs, and experience with DESE

compliance.

● Strong grant writing, budget management;

● Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.

● Dedicated to equity, diversity, and inclusion in program design and implementation.

● Proven track record in securing funding and managing grant-funded projects.
