This position works in the secure portion of the County Jail, in the Control Room, which is a small, enclosed working area located at the secured center of the Jail pods (the cells in which the inmates reside). The Corrections Technicians are not sworn law enforcement officers and are prohibited from having direct physical contact with inmates. The Technician is normally required to stay in the Control Room during the work shift (except for scheduled meals and scheduled breaks). The Technician cannot leave the Control Room without being relieved by another employee. The Technician cannot have any contact with inmates when coming or going to the Control Room.

The Columbia County Jail is a year-round, 24/7 operation and as such, the Technician can be assigned to work as scheduled. Work on holidays and weekends is required. The Corrections Technicians communicate with the Corrections Deputies on duty via radio. After a training period, the Technician is usually on shift in the secure Control Room alone.
