The Internship Opportunity: Risk Management
The Port of Virginia – Virginia Port Authority is seeking a Risk Management Intern that will work closely with the Procurement team to create and implement insurance standardizations for Port of Virginia contracts.
The Port of Virginia's 8-Week Summer Internship Program runs from June 2, 2025 - July 25, 2025, and is designed to develop, teach, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students as they explore career opportunities within the maritime industry. Students will have the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to hands on, project-focused tasks in various departments throughout The Port of Virginia.
What You’ll Do: Outcomes & Experience
• Insurance Analysis & Research: Assist in evaluating and reviewing insurance policies and practices, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations across different business units.
• Insurance Guidelines Creation: Develop clear and comprehensive guidelines for the types of insurance required for various contracts (e.g., vendor agreements, service contracts, access agreements) to mitigate risk and ensure coverage.
• Standardization Development: Help create standardized insurance clauses and terms for inclusion in contracts, aimed at simplifying processes and ensuring consistency across the company.
• Contract Review Support: Assist in reviewing existing contracts and identifying where standardized insurance clauses or guidelines could / should be integrated.
• Data Collection & Reporting: Gather data related to insurance coverage, risk assessments, and claims history to inform the development of insurance guidelines and best practices.
• Collaboration & Documentation: Work with the legal, procurement, and operations teams to ensure that insurance guidelines are aligned with business needs and regulatory requirements.
• Legal Department Collaboration: Participate in discussions with the Port's legal team to understand how insurance provisions impact contract negotiations, liability, and risk.
• Procurement & Vendor Management: Learn how the company evaluates vendors and negotiates coverage options for various business needs.
• Cross-Functional: Contribute to other risk management projects, such as ERM, Process Improvements in Origami, as well and claims handling processes when applicable.
Who You Are: Qualifications
- Must be currently enrolled and in an accredited program or graduate program (having completed freshman / first year) during the time of the program.
- Must be available to work full time (40 hours per week) from June 2, 2025 to July 25, 2025.
