Phlebotomist/Clinical Lab Assistant
Status/FTE: FT / 0.8-1.0 FTE
Shift length: 8 hours
Start Time: 0500
Unit: Laboratory
Schedule Requirements (including weekends, holidays): Monday-Friday
Required qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- BLS upon hire
- Experience or education in medical profession
- Computer, office equipment, organizational, and team skills
- Ability to understand and explain complex instructions
- One (1) or two (2) years' experience within a healthcare setting
- Medical terminology
- Clinical Lab Assistant Certification within 24 months of hire
Preferred qualifications:
- Military or on the job training
- Clinical Laboratory Assistant (CLA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), or some college course work
- Phlebotomy experience
Additional Information/Department information: Major duties involve instructing clients on proper collection and requirements for laboratory specimens. Prepares and processes specimens for analysis in multiple lab departments and for shipping to reference laboratories. Enter, review, and ensure demographic and billing data and testing orders for patients are entered into hospital and laboratory systems following all pertinent regulatory requirements. Assist Clinical Lab Scientists and Pathologists by performing CLIA-waived testing, maintenance, and quality control on laboratory equipment. Perform tasks relative to the daily operation of the laboratory which do not require CLS licensure. Collect specimens from patients such as urine specimens, oral and nasal swabs as well as newborn heel sticks and blood culture collections. Perform phlebotomy and venipuncture across all patient demographics; preformed on patients in the hospital and other sites upon request of authorized person. Work with other departments within the hospital to ensure appropriate specimen collection techniques. This pre-analytic position is responsible for patient order reconciliation, appropriate collection techniques, processing techniques, clerical duties and customer service with the public as well as interdepartmental communications.
