Position Overview
The Water Treatment Plant Operator 1 works under the supervision of the Operations Manager and is responsible for the operation and maintenance of a conventional water treatment system.
Key Requirements:
- Must hold a WSO Certification (State level). If the candidate does not hold one for Hawaii, please confirm if their current certification has reciprocity with Hawaii.
- Water Treatment experience must be Fresh Water (vs. Waste Water).
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversight of operations and maintenance of a conventional water treatment plant, including testing for fresh, drinkable water.
- Develop training and maintenance plans.
- Oversight of sub-contractor technicians to ensure compliance.
- Technical writing skills are required for operational plans.
- Operate, monitor, maintain, and repair conventional water treatment/distribution systems, including but not limited to wells, pumps, water catchments and storage systems, water filtration treatment plants, distribution piping, valves, flow control devices, taps, line stops, backflows, chlorination/dichlorination, leak detection, and analyzers.
- Conduct scheduled preventative maintenance as well as unscheduled maintenance (fault repair).
- Perform daily operations and maintenance inspections of assigned areas, including chemical feed systems, water collection and storage sites, water filtration treatment plants, and facility distribution system components.
- Collect and record periodic system readings (e.g., flow rates, system pressure, analyzer/sensor & meter readings).
- Adjust Water Plant equipment to ensure operational guidelines are followed and comply with federal, state, and US Navy regulations.
- Familiarize with operations of the adsorption system and review its operation at least every two weeks to ensure water quality fit for human consumption.
- Respond to Water Plant emergencies with appropriate immediate and follow-up actions.
- Ensure efficient and economical operation of station water production equipment.
- Maintain required logs.
- Implement and maintain a safe workplace program, prioritizing safety.
- Serve as the on-site representative for the project team, acting as the eyes and ears of the company.
- Contribute to site safety, quality, and compliance as a project team member.
- Correctly document and report supported activities.
- Develop plans and written processes related to water treatment system operations, maintenance, and training programs as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Certifications:
- High School diploma required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
- One year of related experience may be substituted for one year of education if a degree is required.
- 2 years of Water Treatment Plant or related technical school preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean traffic abstract.
- Current Hawaii Water Treatment Plant Operator (WTPO) Certification Grade 1 or higher is required.
Experience:
- 2 years of recent work-related experience in water distribution systems or water treatment plants preferred.
Skills:
- Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
- Able to perform mathematical calculations.
- Mechanically inclined and competent with hand-held tools.
- Electrical background a plus.
- Must be able to clear background checks for access to secure work sites.
- Proficiency with email, word processing, and MS Office Suite.
- Able and willing to perform other duties as required.
Other Requirements:
- The worker is subject to environmental conditions, including heat, rain, and wind, with activities occurring inside and outside.
- The worker may be exposed to extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees for more than one hour).
- The worker may be subject to noise levels requiring shouting to communicate above ambient noise.
- The worker may be exposed to hazards, including proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical currents, high places, high heat, or chemicals.
- Physical requirements include light work, with exertion up to 30 pounds occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently, and constant light lifting. Heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, and sitting may also be required.
