Fisheries Biologist II

Yakima, Klickitat Fisheries Project (YKFP)

Department of Natural Resources

Hourly Wage: $26.94/Regular/Full-Time

Location: Yakima


The Fisheries Biologist II is responsible to assist in two major projects. (1) Avian Predation Monitoring and Evaluation is responsible for the scientific and technical biological research for monitoring and evaluation of avian predation on the Yakima River, for the Yakama Nation. This position requires overseeing Fisheries Technicians conducting avian predation surveys in the Yakima Basin. This individual is responsible for annual project reports, summaries, and professional presentations in order to fulfill contract work statements under the avian predation project. (2) Fish Predation Monitoring and Evaluation is responsible for the scientific and technical biological research involved with the monitoring and evaluation of fish predation on the Yakima River, for the Yakama Nation. This position requires overseeing Fisheries Technicians conducting fish predator surveys and management in the field. This individual is responsible for annual project reports, summaries, and professional presentations in order to fulfill contract work statements for the fish predation project.


Examples of Work Performed:

Develop and implement fisheries studies using a variety of proven and unique methodologies (i.e., electro-fishing principles, fish tagging design and predation studies and design).

Develop effective working relationships with employees, Tribal membership, other agencies, and the general public.

Perform fieldwork outside under all types of conditions including intense physical labor.

Develop scientific writing that pertains to data gathered in the field.

Manage multiple crews of technicians involved in carrying out M&E fieldwork.

Plan, schedule, and conduct data acquisition and analysis projects.

Provide technical assistance to BIA, tribal leadership, and DNR staff.

Assist with other YN projects that support Fisheries Program goals.

Assure that project activities are consistent with tribal and federal policies and regulations.

At direction of the supervisor, share/acquire research, and monitoring findings data from other resource management entities.

Assure that project goals and timelines are met.

Other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Comprehensive knowledge of the life histories of Pacific Salmon, and fish community ecology, especially predator-prey and competitive interactions.

Knowledge of fisheries management practices and strategies in the Columbian Basin, including Tribal Recovery Plan.

Knowledge of general fishery field methodologies (i.e., electro-fishing principles, fish tagging design, predation studies and design).

Ability to develop effective working relationships with employees, Tribal membership, other agencies, and the general public.

Ability to work outside under all types of conditions and to perform physical labor.

Ability to write scientific and research papers for publication in professional journals.

Ability to manage multiple crews of technicians involved in carrying out M&E fieldwork.


Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries or closely related field.

Four years of successful experience as a professional fisheries Biologist I.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.


Preferred Requirements:

Prefer candidate with experience using electro-fishing for salmonid research.

Prefer candidate with experience of motorboat operation and safety protocols.

Prefer candidate with experience in salmonid research as well as developing, implementing, and evaluation salmonid monitoring and evaluation programs.

Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
