Job Summary:
Join our law enforcement team as a Law Enforcement Officer with the Chehalis Tribe. As a crucial member of our force, you will be responsible for maintaining public safety, enforcing laws, and protecting citizens. The Law Enforcement Officer will play a vital role in preventing crime, investigating criminal activities, and ensuring the overall security of the community.
Responsibilities:
- A. Patrols on foot and/or in a radio equipped patrol car or boat within tribal jurisdiction to prevent violations of tribal laws, codes, and ordinances.
B. Performs complex investigation, renders service, enforces traffic and criminal laws, and generally provides for the safety of the public.
C. Enforces tribal laws, codes, and ordinances. Issues warnings and citations where appropriate and makes arrests when necessary.
D. Seizes equipment and evidence relative to violations for disposition by the courts.
E. Reads and applies department policies, rules, regulations, instructions, laws and ordinances, and general literature pertaining to policing.
F. Prepares written reports and memoranda summarizing information. Uses computers for reports, communications, and information retrieval.
G. Testifies and presents evidence in court.
H. Responsible for the protection and conservation of fish, wildlife, and natural resources through the enforecement of tribal hunting and fishing ordinances on the reservation, in the Tribe's usual and accustomed fishing waters and hunting lands.
I. Arranges for disposition of fish, game and other natural resources unlawfully taken.
J. Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for safety of self, others, materials and equipment.
K. May be assigned specialty duties such as Community Relations Officer, Drug Task Force, River and Swift Water Rescue, or K-9 Unit.
L. Performs related work as required.
M. May be assigned duties under the Chehalis Tribe Emergency Management Plan and Program.
Qualifications:
Entry Level Position:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent required. Advanced education is preferred. Must meet physical evaluation board standards upon hire. Required to attend and successfully complete the Bureau of Indian Affairs Basic Police Training Program within one (1) year or have completed Basic Police Academy Certification recognized by the State of Washington.
Lateral Law Enforcement Position:
- High School diploma or GED equivalent required. Advanced education is preferred. Must meet physical evaluation board standards upon hire.
- Basic Police Academy Certification recognized by the State of Washington or Bureau of Indian Affairs Basic Police Program required.
-Two (2) years directly related experience as a Police Officer required.
-Prefer experience with American Indian/Alaska Native communities.
- Proficiency in loss prevention strategies.
- Strong conflict management skills to handle challenging situations effectively.
- Experience in surveillance techniques for monitoring suspicious activities.
- Knowledge of criminal investigation procedures and evidence collection.
- Possession of relevant certifications in law enforcement or related fields.
- Skill in animal handling for situations involving animals.
- Valid driver's license with a clean record for patrolling duties.
- Certification in CPR for providing emergency medical assistance when needed.
