A payroll clerk is responsible for processing employee paychecks by collecting timekeeping data, calculating wages, deducting taxes and other withholdings, issuing paychecks or direct deposits, maintaining accurate payroll records, and ensuring compliance with payroll regulations, all while addressing employee inquiries regarding their pay and deductions; essentially they manage the entire payroll process to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time. Candidate will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement.
Key responsibilities of a payroll clerk may include:
Collecting and verifying timekeeping data: Gathering employee timesheets, verifying hours worked, and identifying any discrepancies.
Calculating payroll: Computing gross earnings, calculating federal and state income taxes, social security deductions, and other withholdings.
Issuing paychecks: Preparing and distributing paychecks or initiating direct deposits.
Maintaining payroll records: Updating employee information in the payroll system, including changes in pay rates, deductions and tax exemptions.
Preparing payroll reports: Generating reports on earnings, deductions, and payroll taxes for management review.
Reconciling payroll data: Matching payroll calculations to bank statements and identifying any discrepancies.
Answering employee payroll inquiries: Responding to questions about paychecks, deductions, and leave time.
Complying with payroll regulations: Staying updated on federal and state payroll laws and ensuring accurate tax filings.
Processing new hires and terminations: Entering new employee data into the payroll system and handling payroll for departing employees.
