Purpose:
This is an AmeriCorps position within an AmeriCorps program focused on expanding access to education, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. The program serves communities in Washington, D.C., with a focus on those historically underserved, by strengthening connections to nature and public lands through inclusive programming and outreach. Guided by the values of equity, sustainability, and public service, the program aims to create welcoming, educational, and enriching experiences for all park visitors.
The AmeriCorps member serving as the Programs & Events Coordinator with Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens will build capacity by planning and promoting educational programs and events, coordinating community outreach and volunteer efforts, and developing partnerships that support long-term access to environmental education. This indirect service position will help strengthen the organization’s ability to connect diverse communities with nature and provide pathways to education and opportunity.
The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build capacity and develop sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty in underserved communities.
Description of Duties:
- Plan and promote programs and events that get people excited about nature and the park, including coordinating special activities during extended evening hours (Come Alive After 5).
- Help grow our volunteer program by creating ways for more people to get involved and stay connected with the park.
- Build relationships with local organizations to expand our reach and create new community partnerships.
- Support outreach efforts to engage more visitors—especially families, youth, and seniors—from nearby neighborhoods.
- Learn the behind-the-scenes of nonprofit work, including communications, visitor engagement, and general operations.
- Track the impact of programs and suggest ways we can improve and grow.
This is an indirect service position—meaning you’ll be working behind the scenes to build lasting systems and programs that make a real difference for the community and the park.
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- At least 18 years of age
- College Graduate
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check
Physical Requirements:

Time Requirements:
- Typically, this position is expected to serve full-time (35-40 hours) from 6/02/25 to 6/01/26, but exact schedules may vary.
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
- Member will receive a Virtual Member Orientation (VMO) from VISTA on their first day of service.

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed their required year of service; the member has satisfactorily completed assignments; and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets, accomplishment tracking, and quarterly reporting.
