Purpose:

This is an AmeriCorps position within an AmeriCorps program focused on expanding access to education, community engagement, and environmental stewardship. The program serves communities in Washington, D.C., with a focus on those historically underserved, by strengthening connections to nature and public lands through inclusive programming and outreach. Guided by the values of equity, sustainability, and public service, the program aims to create welcoming, educational, and enriching experiences for all park visitors.

The AmeriCorps member serving as the Programs & Events Coordinator with Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens will build capacity by planning and promoting educational programs and events, coordinating community outreach and volunteer efforts, and developing partnerships that support long-term access to environmental education. This indirect service position will help strengthen the organization’s ability to connect diverse communities with nature and provide pathways to education and opportunity.

The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build capacity and develop sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty in underserved communities.

Description of Duties:

  • Plan and promote programs and events that get people excited about nature and the park, including coordinating special activities during extended evening hours (Come Alive After 5).

  • Build relationships with local organizations to expand our reach and create new community partnerships.
  • Support outreach efforts to engage more visitors—especially families, youth, and seniors—from nearby neighborhoods.
  • Learn the behind-the-scenes of nonprofit work, including communications, visitor engagement, and general operations.
  • Track the impact of programs and suggest ways we can improve and grow.
