Pay Rate: To maintain internal equity, we have identified the starting rate for this position at the Oakland Zoo as $32.07 per hour. An offer within this rate will be determined by the experience and qualifications of a candidate and will be our best and final compensation offer.   

 

Position Summary  

We are looking for an Assistant Maintenance Manager to work in partnership with the Sr. Manager, Facilities to oversee all installation, repair and upkeep operations of the Oakland Zoo’s facilities and equipment. This is a field manager position which is expected to lead the planning and execution of, various maintenance projects to ensure on-time completion of work while maintaining the highest safety and work product standards.

The assistant maintenance manager will have a solid understanding of plumbing and electrical systems, carpentry and other construction trades as well as mechanics and machinery maintenance. They will be well-versed in all maintenance processes as well as health and safety regulations. The ideal candidate will also have aptitude in undertaking administrative tasks such as issue reporting, vendor management, documentation of work, and payroll. 

The Oakland Zoo’s staff, guests, and animals rely on the Zoo’s Maintenance Department to provide a safe, functional, and enjoyable facility. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys a variety of unique and sometimes challenging projects and is excited about working with the Zoo’s other 20 departments to ensure this 102 year-old community institution continues to provide an outstanding experience for decades to come.

 

Essential Job Duties:

  • Oversee the planning and execution of the Zoo’s Preventative Maintenance Plan, including meeting with other departments to identify and scope out upcoming PMP projects.
  • Act as a primary point of contact with other departments seeking Maintenance support. 
  • Manage Maintenance staff through assignment of daily/weekly work orders through Zoo’s work system and ensure timely and high-quality completion.
  • Guarantee that staff follow health and safety guidelines and seek out opportunities for improving practices to increase safety.
  • Determine if internal capacity is available for a project and then identify, manage, and hire outside contractors as necessary.
  • Work with Sr. Manager to oversee Maintenance department budget.
  • As part of annual budget process, identify capital project needs.
  • Manage team to carry out regular facility inspections, including electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems and equipment monitoring.
  • In partnership with Facilities Coordinator, manage supply inventory, including ordering parts and supplies as needed.
  • Keep maintenance logs and report on daily activities and repairs
  • Provide regular feedback to staff on work quality and efficiency. 
  • When Sr. Manager is not on-site, provide senior level coverage.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Who You Are:

  • Need at least 5 years past experience in a professional maintenance technician or supervisor position, with ideally 1 – 2 years of project management and/or staff management experience.
  • Deep knowledge in at least one of the following technical areas: plumbing, electrical, carpentry, machine repair, or welding is a plus.
  • Over 18 years of age.
  • Ability to be insured under the Zoo’s Auto Insurance Carrier.
  • California Class C Driver’s License.
  • Proven experience as assistant manager, working foreman or other supervisor role.
  • Experience in executing maintenance operations and plans
  • Solid understanding of technical aspects of building trades, electrical systems etc.
  • Working knowledge of facilities machines and equipment.
  • Ability to keep track of and report on activity.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities.

 

Bonus if you have:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Degree from a vocational school or BSc/BA in business administration or facility management will be an advantage, or field experience as an assistant manager or field / working manager is a plus
