Student leadership and well-being are connected to every academic discipline, as all full-time teachers are also grade level advisors.  

 

The school offers a coed program for young children at the Barat Center for Early Childhood Education and then an all-girls experience from K-12 on our 110-acre campus in Greenwich, Connecticut.  We are proudly part of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools.

 

We are currently seeking an Assistant Head of Lower School for the 2025-2026 academic year with a July 1 start date.

FLSA Status: Exempt, 12 Month Employee

 

Job Summary

 

The Assistant Head of Lower School plays a crucial role in supporting the Head of Lower School by overseeing daily activities and operations that are vital for creating a well-functioning educational environment. Key responsibilities of this position include managing day-to-day operations of the Lower School, mapping and implementing curriculum programs, assisting with student discipline matters, organizing school events and field trips, conducting faculty evaluations, aiding in the hiring process for new faculty and staff, etc. By effectively assisting the Head of Lower School, the Assistant Head contributes to a positive school culture, enhances the educational experience for students, and ensures the smooth operation of Lower School programs.

  • Embrace and effectively communicate the mission, vision, and philosophy of the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart

  • Enthusiastically interact with all members of the SHG school community, exhibiting flexibility in thought and action

  • Demonstrate an ability to multitask with attention to detail and organization

  • Exhibit a calming, confident, and inspiring presence in support of faculty and other community members

  • Enthusiastically model and exemplify the behaviors and positive attitudes expected of all members of the SHG community

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with all faculty and staff members

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 
  • Report directly to the Head of Lower School to oversee daily activities and responsibilities, offer constructive feedback, and foster ongoing communication

  • Maintain a visible and approachable presence on campus, implementing an open-door policy to engage with faculty, parents, and students

  • Collaborate with the Head of Lower School to develop annual schedules for all Lower School homerooms and specials teachers, as well as coordinate faculty duties (recess, car dismissal, bus, etc.)

  • Assist the Head of Lower School in managing the daily operations of the school, including student arrival, faculty attendance, lunch, recess (indoor/outdoor), dismissal, and special activities

  • Collaborate with the Business Office and other divisions to ensure proper and safe student placement during bus arrival and dismissal

  • Address student discipline matters and facilitate parent communication regarding discipline issues beyond the classroom teacher's scope

  • Co-facilitate division meetings on a regular basis

  • Meet with grade-level teams and specials teachers to map curriculum by unit and ensure vertical alignment in the Barat - Grade 4 curricular outcomes

  • Collaborate with faculty in other departments across-divisions to identify and develop opportunities for cross-disciplinary learning

  • Lead research and discussion of best practices in teaching and learning

  • Establish and ensures consistent assessment and feedback policies, consistent with Divisional and All School policies, but tailored to the specific needs of Lower School

  • Observe classes and provides constructive, targetted feedback to teachers during the formal evaluation process

  • Offer formative feedback on teaching and assessment practice beyond the formal evaluation process fostering a consistent vision for learning and collaboration among Lower School faculty

  • Identify appropriate professional development for faculty, both as a group and individually

  • Design, implement, and oversee an Assistant Teacher Mentoring Program

  • Assist the Head of Lower School and the Associate Head of School for Teaching & Learning in the recruitment, hiring and training of new faculty

  • Facilitate the implementation of new curriculum programs, including:

     
    • Purchasing and distributing materials

    • Coordinating professional development training

    • Creating pacing guides and providing teaching support during the transition

  • Co-facilitate Task Forces (curriculum, report cards, schedules, etc.)

  • Assist the Head of Lower School in managing Lower School programs, including hosting visiting speakers, the after-school Tiger Time program, and parent programming

  • Collaborate with the Head of Lower School to organize all Lower School events, such as Student Orientation, Back-to-School Night, the Lower School Halloween Parade, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Grandparents and Special Visitors Day, the Christmas Concert, Conge, Prize Days, etc.

  • Coordinate the Director of Educational Technology to oversee the online scheduling of Parent-Teacher Conferences using Pick-a-Time

  • Create and coordinate schedules for all Lower School field trips, including parent communications, permission slips, emergency bags, and transportation

  • Revise and edit report card stems for the Lower School

  • Edit report card comments for all specials teachers

  • Post report cards on Blackbaud

  • Oversee NWEA MAP testing in collaboration with the Math Specialist and analyze results to recommend curriculum improvements

  • Develop and oversee the creation of Lower School  Summer Assignments for students rising into Grades 1-4

  • Participate on the Lower School STEAM Team

  • Contribute as a member of the Committee on Community and Belonging and plan/oversee the monthly Heritage Month Celebration in the Lower School

 

Qualifications:

 
  • Master’s Degree in Education or a related field

  • Minimum of 5 years of classroom teaching experience

  • At least 3 years of administrative experience, ideally in a dynamic school environment

  • Proven experience in curriculum mapping

  • Strong organizational and planning abilities

  • Excellent time management skills with the capacity to multitask and prioritize effectively

  • Outstanding problem-solving skills

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficiency in technology, particularly the Google Suite

  • Strong judgment and discretion regarding confidential information

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a commitment to high levels of customer service

  • Deep appreciation for children and young adults, recognizing the significant role of educational institutions in their lives and the broader community
