The Supervising Payroll Technician plays a vital role in overseeing payroll operations and ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing. This position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple deadlines, and effective communication with internal departments and external agencies. The ideal candidate will have experience in payroll administration, knowledge of relevant labor laws and tax regulations, and the ability to provide leadership and guidance to a team of payroll professionals.

  • Coordinating with HR and finance teams on payroll-related matters.
  • Preparing payroll reports, maintaining payroll records, and assisting with audits.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may remain in effect for twelve (12) months.

Minimum Qualifications

License: Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license may be required. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the applicant process.

Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificate.

Experience: Four (4) years of full-time (or the equivalent of full-time) experience in the preparation, processing, and maintenance of accounting documents and records, at least two (2) years at the Payroll Technician level, or higher, in Contra Costa County or equivalent classification.

Substitution for Experience: Education: 1) Completion of 12 semester or 18 quarter units in accounting from an accredited college or university can be substituted for one year of the required experience; additional education units in business administration, finance, accounting, auditing or a college degree in a closely related field may be substituted for one year of required experience; 2) Possession of a current Certified Payroll Professional credential issued by the American Payroll Association may be substituted for two years of required experience. No substitution is allowed for the required two (2) years at the Payroll Technician level, or higher, in Contra Costa County or equivalent classification.

Selection Process

Selection Process:

  • Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
  • Online Oral Assessment: Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an online video interview and writing assessment. The assessment will measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the Supervising Payroll Technician classification. These may include but are not limited to Attention to Detail, Writing, Critical Thinking, Oral Communication, Adaptability, Analyzing and Interpreting Data, Innovative Problem Solving, and Professional and Technical Expertise. (Weighted 100%)
  • Final Selection Interviews: These will be scheduled by the department once the eligible list is established.

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
