What are the responsibilities and job description for the AGRICULTURE CONSERVATION LIAISON position at County Of Maui?
Through an agreement between the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and County of Maui, this position will perpetuate good land stewardship, local food production, and culture within the County of Maui including terrestrial, shore, and coral reef systems; promote innovative land management solutions to help mitigate risks relating to future fires or natural disasters, support and promote NRCS Farm Bill Programs and practices related to climate resilience and the Inflation Reduction Act. This position is grant-funded through September 30, 2027.
This position is expected to travel and stay overnight a minimum of two nights once a quarter on Molokai and Lana?i; travel three times a year to Oahu and three times a year to Hawai?i island for partner meetings with government and non-government agency partners, determining and securing assistance to support work occurring in Maui County.

- Identification and mapping of critically imperiled agricultural lands, shorelines, and coral reef systems in Maui County with emphasis on fire impacted lands that include west Maui, Lahaina, and Kula.
- Collaborates with other County departments, state, federal agencies, and community resources on developing plans for land stewardship, watershed recovery,fire mitigation, and local food production.
- Promote vegetation restoration management strategies to the public, and target landowners of both managed and unmanaged working lands through agriculture conservationfield work.
- Promote NRCS Farm Bill programs, Inflation Reduction Act and other practices related to agriculture conservation.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Bachelor’s degree preferred with major study in forestry, range management or conservation, wildlife management, agriculture crop or plant science, soil science, other natural or physical sciences, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position or four years of work in those areas in any combination.
Examples of Qualifying Experiences:
- Installing and maintaining conservation measures on public or privately owned land including parks, shoreline, refuse waste sites, dams and reservoir areas, water and sewer sites, road embankments, forests, and wildlife habitats
- Installing and maintaining soil and water conservation measures on farms, ranches, or agricultural land
- Work in the conservation, regulation, and use of public or Federally controlled lands for grazing
- Range research activities
- Work in the operation of a livestock ranch or in assisting in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range
- Range or forest fire control, prevention, or suppression work
- Forestry aid or technician work
- Engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on non-forest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment
- Farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use
- Forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work
License Requirement: Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver’s license (Type 3).

Ability to: formulate ideas and express them clearly and concisely orally and in writing; work cooperatively with employees, other government officials, and the general public; communicate effectively with the various segments of the public; organize and facilitate meetings; prepare clear and concise reports; research data; communicate clearly and foster good relationships.
