Position Purpose :

To exercise overall responsibility for managing, planning, scheduling, implementing, and reporting on the daily and special duties of the Security and Access Control Shop. The shop's responsibilities also include overseeing the sound / public address systems, centralized clocks, and scoreboards. This position supervises full-time employees, as well as numerous subcontractors hired for special projects or to perform services not provided by the College. The Security and Access Control Shop Supervisor is responsible for all the performance and management of security and access control related work performed at the College.

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp : High School plus 5 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities :

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Ability to obtain professional certificates as required.
  • Five years of management experience in security and access control.
  • Ten years of varied, progressive security access experience, including development of access control protocols.
  • Experience leading in a team environment preferred.
  • Extensive experience in estimating, scheduling and managing multi-trade projects desired.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Extensive knowledge of the skilled and semi-skilled trades associated with Security and Access Controls.
  • General knowledge of public address systems, sound systems, centralized clock systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and demonstrated skill in a wide variety of security systems, including key, combination and electronically operated locks.
  • Working knowledge of all applicable safety codes and regulations, building codes relating to work performed by the shops, and relevant College policies and practices.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written format with a variety of audiences.
  • Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.

    Description :

    Management Responsibilities

  • Under minimal supervision from FO&M management, plans and executes strategic direction for Security and Access Control Shop operations.
  • Evaluates and improves existing operational security and access control procedures by monitoring industry best practices.
  • Responsible for planning work and staff schedules, communicating job expectations and ensuring shop compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for annual and project specific budget preparation.
  • Works with Athletic department to ensure scoreboards and associated sound systems are operational for events.
  • Works with Conference and Events to ensure public address systems are in place and operational for events.
  • Oversees institutional clocks such as the Baker Tower and Alumni Gym clocks to ensure they are functional.
  • Oversees the shop's equipment and supply inventory.
  • Responsible for hiring, performance management, evaluations, promotions, transfers and staff vacation schedules.
  • Fosters a collaborative teamwork environment, developing staff morale and overall shop productivity.
  • Communicates effectively with FO&M management and the College community.
  • Provides or requests, as needed, documentation related to leave time, injuries, reimbursements and similar.

    General Responsibilities

  • Maintains current working knowledge of all access and electronic security systems under his or her purview, including card access, combination locks, keys and video surveillance. Card access includes both card readers for doors as well as cash registers, vending machines, and similar devices where cards are used.
  • Establishes safety, quality control and productivity standards applicable to the trade, ensures that these standards reflect best industry practices and are applied in the performance of work.
  • Plans, prioritizes, and assigns all work for which the Security and Access Control Shop is responsible, providing estimates and reporting for work as required.
  • Receives and reviews work orders, manages inspection and assessment of work to be performed and assigns appropriate resources based on a comprehensive assessment of all conditions and requirements.
  • Formulates and implements new policies and procedures, as necessary, to ensure that work safety, quality control and productivity standards are met for all work performed.
  • Provides staff training and holds shop meetings to maintain appropriate and productive communication with staff.
  • Oversees user training to operate security and access control systems.
  • Develops scope and specifications for routine work, special projects or for services not provided by the College.
  • Solicits and reviews bids for services, performs appropriate bid analysis and awards work so as to achieve best value for the College.
  • Tests, inspects and evaluates in-progress and completed work for compliance with safety, quality, and productivity standards.
  • Approves and monitors resource use (personnel, tools, equipment, vehicles and supplies) and ensures that adequate resources are available to perform work in a safe and productive manner.
  • Monitors and evaluates material and products used by shops in order to ensure that appropriate standards are set and maintained related to performance and cost effectiveness.
  • Uses multiple internal and external systems to requisition and obtain materials and products in a manner that achieves best value for the College.
  • Coordinates work and personnel needs with FO&M administrators, supervisors and administrative staff as well as representatives from other departments and organizations as required.
