Title: Medical Office Assistant- WIC BFPCJob Responsibilities

- Peer Counselor teaches basic; evidence-based techniques that help ensure a successful start in breastfeeding; works within the policies and procedures of the WIC program; maintaining records according to legal requirements and ethical practices.
- Frequent follow ups with breastfeeding clients by phone as well as the need for maintaining an accurate and organized record of all contacts.
- Collects medical data (height; weight; hemoglobin) needed for assessment of eligibility for WIC Program and record.
- Performs the major duties of Office support including making appointments; determining eligibility; issuing eWIC cards and benefits; voter’s registration; delivering and recording low-risk education mini lessons; transfer of certifications; collect; assembly and delivery of materials to client pick up areas; curbside deliver of WIC materials to clients as needed. Coordinate appointments for the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program participants. May provide education about WIC as needed in the community.
- Maintain inventory of WIC owned breast pumps; track issuance; clean and store pumps returned according to agency policy.
Knowledge; Skills and Abilities
- Some knowledge of the principles and practices of patient care and techniques of practical nursing.
- Some knowledge of common health and safety precautions in working in local health departments.
- Ability to work with staff and patients; under supervision; as set up by departmental policies.
- Ability to maintain clerical records and to compile reports from these records.
- Ability to use sound judgment and empathy in dealing with patients.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Education and Experience
High school or General Educational Development diploma; completion of a one-year formal training course in medical office assisting at a community college or technical institute; or High school or General Educational Development diploma and a combination of one year of clerical and health/dental related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid North Carolina Driver License.
Additional Training/Experience
Personal history of breast feeding required; previous WIC clients are preferred. Demonstrated possession of knowledge; skills and abilities as stated above through at least one year of experience in performing similar tasks in a clinical setting. Upon hire; Successful completion of WIC LATCH Breastfeeding Curriculum Levels 1 and 2; North Carolina WIC Program’s Peer Counselor Care Plan Training; quarterly BFPC trainings through regional Breastfeeding Consultant’s office. Breastfeeding Supply Competency Training through UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health Institute for Public Health.
Physical Requirements
This position will be able to physically perform the basic life operational support functions of stooping; kneeling; reaching; walking; lifting; fingering; talking; hearing and repetitive motions. This position must be able to perform sedentary work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and /or up to 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift; carry; push; pull or otherwise move objects.
