Essential Functions
- Lead and mentor Control engineers charged with creating, modifying and maintaining machine programs for robotic packaging machines, 3rd party integration, and complete systems.
- Coordinate short-term and long-term project planning as it relates to engineering activities to ensure the proper resource utilization and timeline execution.
- Facilitate team decisions on issues related to program concepting, safety, design, debug and qualification.
- Assist with machine program development and coordination with Scheduling, Project Management, Mechanical Engineers, and Electrical Engineers. These developments include programs for: PLC’s, HMI’s, Robotics, etc.
- Report overall departmental performance, time-plan deviations, project risks, etc. to the Automation Manager in a timely manner and propose methods that can reduce deviations and risks in the future.
- Report machine performance or safety concerns to the Automation Manager. Follows safety standards as dictated by the relevant government entities (UL,NEC, local authorities, etc.).
- Assist with standardized methods & documentation of engineering activities and programs.
- Implement and sustain engineering design strategy aimed at the best use of latest technology and industry standards across the organization as well as lifecycle management of major controls components.
- Suggest improvements and propose new processes with the intent of reducing lead-time and costs.
- Assist and suggest new developments and commercialization of machine programs, functions, and concepts.
- Staff Supervisory:
- Monitor the work performance of subordinates and recommends a yearly training plan.
- Report any activities involving disciplinary action, sub-standard work performance, or other actions that might require documentation in a timely manner to the Automation Manager.
- Have regular one on ones with each subordinate to understand current workload and issues they are dealing with.
- Assist assembly floor, manufacturing, and service to solve engineering problems.
- Act to assist the Service Department in troubleshooting and solving machine issues in the field.
- Act as deputy for the Automation Manager when times of absence.
- Four-year degree in Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Manufacturing Engineering or two-year Degree in Engineering or Robotics (or equivalent) with related experience in the field of automation and robotics.
- 6 years’ experience in machine automation field
- Progressive experience in industrial controls programing, design, safety, and automation.
- Demonstrated leadership skills including the ability to influence & motivate people within all levels of the organization.
- Previous experience leading projects or teams in the area of automated equipment for manufacturing. Packaging equipment experience preferred.
- Solid comprehension of electrical, controls, and pneumatic systems. Electromechanical experience preferred.
- Ability to prioritize projects concurrently in a dynamic environment.
- Experience with motion controls of VFDs and Servos is required.
- Experience working with Rockwell Automation PLCs (ControlLogix, CompactLogix), VFDs (PowerFlex 525 and 527), servo drives (Kinetix 5700 and 5500) and HMIs (PanelView) is required
- Experience with Fanuc or other robotics in pick and place is preferred
- Experience with packaging machinery preferred.
- Experience with 3D SolidWorks CAD, SolidWorks PDM systems and AutoCAD Electrical is preferred.
- Experience interrupting safety levels, NEC and UL standards is preferred
- Able to read, understand, analyze and problem solve electrical and mechanical drawings and engineering related software programs.
- Able to use standard computer programs for work processing including Microsoft Office products.
- Able to tutor and/or lead others on designs and projects.

Must be able to:
- Sit at a desk or in meetings for extended periods, including performing extensive computer tasks.
- The majority of duties are performed in an office setting, carrying out detail work sitting at a desk and working on the computer.
- Twenty percent (30%) of the work is performed on an assembly floor or at customer sites with exposure to tools, dirt, dust, chemicals, metals and plastics, varying temperatures, construction noises and odors from production processes.
- The estimated amount of time spent traveling to customer sites or industry events is less than twenty percent (10%).
Must Be Able To
- Use general office equipment such as computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copiers, e-mail, calculator and other such equipment.
