Job Overview
Democracy Docket is seeking an Opinion Writer/Editor to join our growing team. This new role will spearhead Democracy Docket’s opinion section, ghost-writing opinion articles on democracy issues for our founder, as well as assigning and editing articles written by our external contributors. The ideal candidate is a strong researcher and writer with a grasp of democracy issues, and a solid editor who can polish incoming drafts, ensuring they’re framed so as to bring out their key takeaway.
Key Responsibilities
This position is based in Washington, D.C., or Jersey City, New Jersey and will be part of the News Team while working closely with our founder and the Growth Team. We currently operate on a hybrid schedule, with remote work on Mondays and Fridays and in-office days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Key Responsibilities
- Research, outline and ghostwrite content for our founder’s written pieces.
- Assign, edit and publish guest contributor content with a keen eye for detail.
- Work with senior staff to shape the direction of Democracy Docket’s opinion content.
- Adapt to fast-paced workflows and be responsive to urgent editorial needs, including outside of normal business hours.
- Coordinate with the Growth, News and Social teams, as needed, to ensure content aligns with organizational priorities.
- 3-5 years of experience in writing and/or editing political journalism, preferably opinion journalism.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail.
- Proficient in AP style.
- Experience with digital publishing platforms and content management systems.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet tight deadlines.
- Familiarity with legal, political, or democracy-related issues is a strong plus.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced media environment that requires flexibility.
