Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Communications Operator to join our team. The ideal candidate will serve as the first point of contact for incoming communications for Denison University and the Office of Campus Safety, ensuring efficient and effective handling of calls and messages. This role requires excellent phone etiquette, strong clerical skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities
- Receive calls from the general public for the university working in the Office of Campus Safety
- Perform multiple service functions in the Campus Safety Communications Center to support the general safety of the university community.
- Receive calls from faculty, staff, students, and visitors and dispatch the appropriate Campus Safety units via radio communications.
- Serve as a vital link between the community, the Office of Campus Safety, and all other emergency and non-emergency services available at the university and the surrounding community.
- Work with a diverse community performing various activities in support of the community service philosophy.
- Receive emergency calls requesting police, fire, or EMS assistance.
- Maintain a record of all calls and radio traffic by way of the computer-aided dispatch system.
- Operate telephone equipment, computer-aided dispatch system, alarm control system, CCTV cameras, university access system.
Qualifications
- Will work weekends (Saturday/Sunday), and cover the night shift.
- Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Experience in dispatching and answering phone systems. Skills working with computers. Good communication skills both oral and written.
- Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license, and be insurable through the University.
- Be able to sit and stand for long periods.
- Able to professionally respond to community needs, including stressful situations and incidents involving young adults who may be impaired as a result of mental health issues or alcohol or drug use.
