Want to spend the summer hiking, camping and backpacking the central and southern Sierra Nevada Mountain Range? Join CDFW's Central Region Wildlife Management team for summer 2025 deer surveys. Position duties include:
Biological Sample Collection: Assists with deer population data collection following established protocols. Collect field data consisting of deer pellets and carnivore scat for DNA extraction, camera trapping, and habitat measurements. These duties include establishing transects, set-up and maintenance of camera traps, vegetation and composition surveys. Drive and operate four-wheel drive vehicles for fieldwork. Hike under various terrain and weather conditions to selected sampling sites. Contact private landowners tribes and public agencies prior to site visits.
Data Entry, Organizing, and Processing: Perform and organize data entry, quality assurance, quality control on biological sample processing, datasheets, report writing and summaries, photo interpretation from camera trap images using software applications. Processing and preserving collected samples from the field using sterilized tools for genetic analysis. Monitor and prevent detrimental effects of processing equipment and samples both in field and office environment.
Wildlife Management Projects: Assist with projects related to the Wildlife Management Program, including composition surveys, capture support, routine maintenance of vehicles and other equipment to ensure safety, supply inventory, preparation of field equipment and data sheets, harvest tag entry, researching, planning, and mapping.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.
  • Applicants who receive public assistance under the CalWORKs program shall be given hiring priority consideration as provided in Government Code, Section 19063.
  • Applicants who receive public assistance need to identify themselves as CalWORKs recipients in the comments section of the STD 678, Examination/Employment Application.
  • Applicants must submit verification of CalWORKs eligibility, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) eligibility or a copy of the most recent aid check stub.
  • Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program. If CalWORKs verification is not submitted with the application, it will not be processed as CalWORKs eligible.
  • Participation by a public assistance recipient is voluntary and in no event shall any person be subject to sanctions, through loss of benefits or eligibility, for not applying for, accepting, or continuing in a seasonal or entry level non-testing classification opening.

Working Conditions

This is a field based position working in remote areas with limited cell service or internet. Must be willing and able to backpack and/or camp multiple days in a row. Ability to work long, irregular hours, including early mornings, evening and weekends. Ability to use a computer keyboard in a sitting and/or standing position several hours a day. Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. Ability to carry a 40lb pack over rough, uneven terrain. Willingness to ride pack stock. Will interact with regional staff and members of the public via e-mail, telephone, and in person. Must attend occasional meetings. Field activities may involve strenuous physical labor in variable weather conditions ranging from below freezing to 110 degrees. Possession of valid driver license required. Ability to drive up to 8 hours. Wearing a uniform while working in public is required.
NOTE: Frequent weekend and holiday work may be required.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Familiar with the fundamentals of fish and wildlife management and ecology
  • Knowledge and experience with data collection, entry, and management
  • Able to follow established protocols
  • Able to work independently and in a team setting with minimum supervision
  • Experience with software programs such as MS Office and mapping applications
  • Able to safely operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle
  • Able to carry 40 pounds over steep and uneven terrain
  • Able to camp overnight in primitive conditions multiple days at a time
  • Able to tolerate exposure to thick brush, biting insects, and inclement weather
  • Able to perform quality assurance/control and submit weekly work summaries and reports.
  • Able to use basic hand tools
  • Familiar with use of GPS and/or 2-way satellite communication devices
