What are the responsibilities and job description for the FISH AND WILDLIFE TECHNICIAN position at Department of Fish and Wildlife?
Under the supervision of the Fish Hatchery Manager I, this position performs support at California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) hatcheries statewide. This position involves all aspects of fish culture such as: trapping, spawning, rearing, feeding, treating, transporting, recovering and recording data for salmon and Steelhead. Incumbent must be able to operate (with department training) forklifts, fish pumps, feed carts, crowders and Off Highway Vehicles (OHV) etc. Perform grounds, facility and equipment maintenance.
In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam.

Working Conditions
Operation of a vehicle that requires a commercial class A license. The Incumbent must be able to obtain a California Commercial Class A Driver’s license within one year of appointment. The Incumbent must possess and maintain a Commercial Driving License Class A with a tank endorsement. CDFW requires participation by all commercial drivers to be in a random Drug and Alcohol Testing Program. Incumbent will be working outside in all weather conditions performing tasks, standing for long periods on asphalt, concrete, and uneven ground. Working in and around water. Driving vehicles on and off road. Must be able to work some holidays, odd hours, weekends, special events and some overnight travel to distant release locations. This position requires the incumbent to wear prescribed class B, C, D, and E uniforms (according to CDFW guidelines) during work hours.
No State housing is available.

Special Requirements
A high degree of personal initiative is required. A successful candidate will need to be self-motivated and possess both written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment, and the ability to think and work creatively. The position requires limited travel to project and facility locations throughout the Region.
Public Outreach: Will have almost daily contact with members of the public, answer questions and describe the general daily activities. May participate in fairs and local events.
Aptitude for fish and wildlife conservation work, construction, repair and maintenance work; willingness to live and work throughout the state and work unusual hours (weekends, holidays and overtime); be reliable; willingness to do manual labor, work in adverse weather conditions and on uneven ground. Experience with basic math and critical thinking.
Ability to swim at least 50 yards and to stay afloat at least five minutes; good physical condition; and ability to lift 40 pounds.
Must work with others and be cordial and respectful.
