Job Duties
The Benefit Specialist position will be responsible for the Central and Western Region within the Virginia Department of Corrections Re-entry Unit. This position will support Correctional Centers, Probation and Parole District Offices and Community Corrections Alternative Programs.
The Virginia Department of Corrections Reentry Unit remains committed to supporting inmates and probationers in the reentry process, enhancing community partnerships, and equipping those under our care with necessary programs and services. These efforts model the agency mission of helping people to be better while addressing the need for advancing long term public safety.
Assists with the Department’s efforts to improve benefit-related programs and Medicaid enrollment for inmates and supervisees. Benefit related services include Medicaid enrollment, Medicaid youth program, identification documents, child support and SSA benefit programs. Serves as a subject matter expert on benefit-related committees. Provide technical assistance and facilitates training to institutional and community staff and external stakeholders regarding the Department’s benefit processes. Explores innovative and technical opportunities to further enhance and advance the Department’s benefit-related efforts. Increases benefit services and Medicaid enrollment for supervisees under probation and parole. Position will be required to travel throughout assigned region to offer support and training to assigned facilities and stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications
Extensive knowledge of Virginia’s criminal justice system, and familiarity with corrections (facilities and community corrections). Experience with the Medicaid enrollment process. Experience developing and facilitating training. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of agencies and levels of management. Ability to work independently, multi-task, and maintain effective working relationships. Experience developing and facilitating training. Able to travel throughout Commonwealth as necessary.
Additional Considerations
Advanced knowledge specific to Corrections and Medicaid. Experience working with VaCoris and the Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS)
