The Accounting Manager will play a critical role in the accounting department: overseeing accounting functions, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and providing financial insights to support business decisions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in accounting, excellent analytical and technology skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of accounting function to ensure effective internal controls are followed and assets of the organization are managed
  • Develop and maintain financial record keeping and reporting systems to maintain internal controls and comply with statutory requirements
  • Prepare financial reports and present updates for organization leadership, the Board of Directors and the Finance & Audit Committee
  • Work closely with the President & CEO to prepare and manage annual operating budgets, as well as maintain ongoing forecasts
  • Work with external CPA firm to ensure completion of federal, state and local tax returns and complete an annual audit of organizational finances
  • Collaborate across departments to generate invoices and record receipts to ensure effective operations of partner dues, hotel room block charges, sponsorships, grants, and other DM initiatives
  • Audit and reconcile all expenses according to financial policy, organizational chart of accounts, and budget guidelines
  • Prepare biweekly payroll and related deductions using third-party platform
  • Develop, implement and communicate financial procedures to streamline the workflow of the organization
  • Manage relationships with banking partners and represent Destination Madison to relevant external stakeholders
  • Assist with other accounting and operational duties as assigned

Desired Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration with 6-8 years of relevant experience
  • Experience with accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, general ledger and budgets is required
  • Prior experience handling taxes, managing capital expenditures and contracts
  • Knowledge and expertise in the financial requirements of non-profit organizations preferred

  • Cultivates relationships across a variety of functions for the mutual exchange of knowledge, ideas and resources
  • Well-developed technical skills and expertise with accounting software systems, including QuickBooks and MS Excel. Ability to readily learn new technologies and adopt emerging innovations to fit business needs
  • Strong commitment to detail, quality and accuracy with the ability to handle and maintain confidential data
  • Effective communicator who listens attentively to the unique needs of different audiences, balances decisions, and adjusts messaging to fit the situation and audience
  • Flexibility to work with conceptual accounting issues and apply knowledge of internal structures and processes to new situations
  • Brings a continuous improvement mindset and looks for opportunities to optimize processes for effective workflows

Work Environment & Job Specifications

The work environment and job specifications listed below are representative of those that must be met by an employee, with or without reasonable accommodation, to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Primarily perform work in our downtown Madison office, with flexibility to work remotely and/or adjust schedule based on job duties based on current organizational policies
  • Work with frequent interruption and sit for long periods of time. Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally move up to 25 pounds
  • Evening and weekend work may be required for events and organization functions 

Compensation & Benefits

The expected pay range for this position is $80,000 to $87,000 annually, commensurate with experience. A comprehensive benefits package is offered to all full-time team members. More information is available on our Careers page: www.visitmadison.com/jobs
