JOB TITLE UNDERWRITING MANAGER
REPORTS TO VP of Operations
EXEMPT/NON-EXEMPT Exempt
SUMMARY The Underwriting Manager is responsible for overseeing a team of Mortgage Underwriters, ensuring quality and compliance of loan approvals. This position will lead a positive culture within their department
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Train, Lead and inspire a team of underwriters, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure high performance and collaborate
- Evaluate and implement efficient Underwriting processes to stay relevant
- Conducts underwriting review process in a manner designed to minimize the company's risk while employing problem resolution techniques in approving loans
- Analyze property characteristics and all other information pertinent to credit and property decision
- Respond to product questions and scenarios with suitable answers
- Ensure compliance with company and agent
- Provide prompt and quality customer service both internally and offer alternative options when reviews are escalated
- Adheres to set turnaround times for reviewing new submissions as well as resubmissions.
- When necessary, underwrite Conventional, FHA, USDA and VA residential loans ensuring they comply with FNMA, FHLMC, Investor and Government agency guidelines
- Manage the day-to-day tasks of the Underwriting Department
- Other duties as assigned
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s Degree in business, banking, or finance
- 6-10 years of recent underwriting experience in the mortgage industry.
- Leadership or Management experience
- Proficiency in Conventional, FHA and VA loans; experience with CHFA, USDA and 203k
- Proficient understanding of underwriting requirements, governmental and agency requirements, terminology, and automated processing systems
- Interpersonal skills to create and maintain positive working relationships
- Computer proficiency, particularly with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience with mortgage software, such as Calyx Point, Encompass, Data Track or Empower
- DE, CHUMS, VA/SAR
